I've just got home from work at my small Liberal Arts University here in Dallas. We were open today, and will be again tomorrow and Monday, admitting students from Loyola, Xavier and Tulane that have been displaced by Katrina. My staff and I have been entering applications into our systems, while my Dean and the admissions counselors have been welcoming these folks and shepherding them through the process. We've brought in over twenty so far.

 

On my way home, driving up US 75 North, I passed a convoy of about 25 buses interspersed with a Texas State Trooper every so often. They were headed somewhere North of my home, maybe Oklahoma, I don't know. As I was passing, the broken, haunted looks I saw on the faces in the windows was something I will not soon forget.

 

In World War II I believe, an expression was coined to describe the look of a soldier who had seen too much. It was called "The Thousand Yard Stare." I never in my life expected to see that look from a little girl, maybe eight years old, staring at me through a bus window, but I have now.

 

Something profoundly awful has happened to us. And we may live with the impact for decades. If you're a prayerful person, now is a really good time to ask for His help.
