Lives Blown Apart
NYT ^ | 8/15/05 | Bob Herbert

Posted on 08/14/2005 6:36:14 PM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

...After verifying her identity, ...man on the phone assured her that her son, Bobby Rosendahl, who was stationed in Iraq, was still alive. But he'd been badly wounded.

With that Saturday night phone call, life as Ms. Olson had known it came to an end. Her family's long, long period of overwhelming sacrifice was under way.

Bobby Rosendahl, a 24-year-old Army corporal (and avid golfer) from Tacoma, Wash., was literally blown into the air last March 12 when an improvised explosive device detonated beneath his Stryker armored vehicle. He remembers landing on his back, with fuel spilling all around him and insurgents firing at him from the roof of a mosque.

Ms. Olson, during an interview in Washington, D.C., where Corporal Rosendahl is being treated at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, quietly cataloged her son's wounds:

"Both of his heels and ankles were crushed. He had a compound fracture of his femur in two places. Three-quarters of his kneecap was missing. His thigh was blown away. He had many, many open wounds, which all have closed except four right now."

She paused, sighed, then went on: "His left leg was amputated three weeks after he arrived here. He's not willing to give up his right leg. He's hoping to save it. All he wants to do is golf again. But we don't know. He's had 36 surgeries so far."

When you talk to close relatives of men and women who have been wounded in the war, it's impossible not to notice the strain that is always evident in their faces. Their immediate concern is with the wounded soldier or marine. But just behind that immediate concern, in most cases, is the frightening awareness that they have to try and rebuild a way of life that was also blown apart.....

These people at the NY Times suck.

And the point of this article is what? That war is a terrible, thing, people are horribly injured and crippled for life? That their families lives are turned upside down because of this?

Only liberals don't understand the cost of war, because they let everyone else carry their weight all the time. Everyone else gets to shoulder the moral burden, and the liberals get to drink their wine and talk about how imperialistic and fascistic the USA is.

This is the NYT anti-war anti-Bush agenda. All negative all the time.

These assholes have probably never read Bob Dole's book because he is a Republican, but it might have saved them from writing something that someone else has already written on.

Oh wait. That's how they get all of their material. This guy, Bob Hebert, is a flaming anti-american liberal. He is a featured columnist on Barbara Streisand's web site. Talk about hard-up.

Ann Coulter is right on the money about these sacks of crap called liberals.

If Bobby Herbert and the NY Slimes really cared about this wounded soldier they did a terrible job of showing it.They used him as a prop in the same manner that mother Sheehan is using her dead son.The Slimes could have used this article as the perfect opportunity to start a fund for this guy and his family. The article would have been a great way to advertise and raise money but then again their agenda has nothing to do with helping and everything to do with hurting.

With a son in the US Marines, I can start to have an idea, in a small way, of the pain this family is going thru - as are all the families of the men lost or injured while in Service.

That said--

What would have been the take of this "columnist" if the young man had been hit by a 53 Chevy driven by a drunk, who also happens to be in the country illegally? Most likely, not a peep.

The nation loses 40K+ per year to drunk drivers, twice that many to lung cancer (at least that what the news had been saying the last bit) heck - the National safety council says 600+ folks a year strangle themselves in bed.

Each of these deaths is a tragedy to the families involved -but we still have drunk drivers, lung cancer from smoking and so on.

My point? The losses to the families are incalculable, but to the Nation, small. A rational Nation must count all of the costs and pursue polices that meet National needs, goals, and in some cases, desires.

Freedom is not free, and the current battles in the middle-east may (most likely IMO) will affect the future of this Nation. Given the cost, one can only hope for the good outcome. Our children and grandchildren will know the answer.....
