We'd be better off with Sadam if this is the ultimate result.

its too early to tell what this means. if we start seeing women losing rights, and mullahs and clerics holding government positions of power - then we will know its gone badly.

You guys are a bunch of dopes.
What did you expect? ... Did you think the Iraqi constitution was going to be based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. It's an Islamic country. They are a very religious society, and they are not going to start hang pictures of George Washington and the ten commandment on their court houses.

Suppose the Germans decided to institute a government basedon Mein Kampf after we won WW2.
Would we let them?
WE should be dictating the conditions and wording of their Constitution.
This is digusting.

Oh, *their* Constitution. I was afraid I'd overslept by 20 years and it meant *ours*.

First, Ridiculous statement.
Second, I would wait to see the final document before you all go into hysterics. (Shades of Bashing Bush when everyone KNEW Judge Edith Clement was his SC nominee)
Third, according to
http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/ which is running commentary on the constitution process:
"Regarding Islam and the constitution: it was agreed upon that no laws that are against the widely agreed upon values of Islam can be issued and no laws that are against the values of democracy and human rights can be issued."

A draft constitution for Iraq to be presented to parliament on Monday will make Islam "a main source" for legislation and ban laws that contradict religious teachings, members of the parliamentary drafting panel said.
Might I suggest a different foreign policy approach...

Of course they are going to base their laws on Islam, our laws are based on Christianity. Did anyone think they were going to base their laws on Hinduism ? Women are the key to defeating Islamofacism, they must have equal rights and Islamofacism will die.

I sure as hell wouldn't accept as fact anything rooters had to say about this.
Besides if I'm not mistaken the constitution has to be ratified by a 75% vote from the people, that percentage of vote will require a compromise. In other words this isn't the final draft and is probably being spun by rooters in the most negative way it can.
But you know hey we could always just go back to bases in Saudia Arabia and fly the "no fly zones". That was really great such a nice arrangement.......

This whole thing is about to implode. Islam or no Islam, the Sunnis will veto it unless the federalism language is removed.

Al-Saghir said the blocs agreed that no laws would be adopted that contradict the principles of Islam. "In addition, no law shall be adopted that contradicts human rights and democratic principles," he said.I'm confused. Islam DOES "contradict human rights and democratic principles"

Agreed. We should just put him back in power with an American garrison there with him 24/7. He's the only one who knew how to run that stinking place.

If we had partitioned Iraq into 3 pieces (Sunni, Shite, Kurd), we could have contained this problem more. Perhaps only the Shite south going Islamic government. We still could have maintained bases out in the boonies to maintain a military presence in the Middle East.
Now we paid mucho $$$$ for a big "Iran West" that's ready to fall apart after we leave. A Yugoslavia without Tito, a divided Iraq without a strong, secular dictator.
Partitioning would have been MUCH cheaper, got us out faster, and most importantly, would have cost fewer American casualties.
American foreign policy always fails to clearly define beneficial objectives before it commits troops. Bush I was an exception. Look at the damage FDR did with Stalin, and Wilson during WWI.

To: Charlesj
Oh, grow up. We clearly state in our founding documents that our rights and laws are derived from God. As a predominantly Muslim country what else did you expect? The proof will be in the interpretation of Islam and the practices adopted. If universal suffrage and an independent judiciary are adopted you can stop worrying.
