I hear Atlanta is bad for crime...

It is the crime capitol of the world.

The surrounding area is very nice though, but downtown Atlanta has turned into a dump.

Atlanta is big. That's about all I can say for it. I guess it's better than DC if that helps.

Ever think that it's big and GROWING for a reason? There is a reason why cities like Atlanta, Miami, Houston and Dallas are big and still growing.

Atlanta aint a real city. Just a bunch of sprawling suburbs with an office park in the middle.

New York and Chicago are the only two real cities in the United States, in a global sense. Every place else is either sprawling McSuburb or hicksville, and I don't use those terms pejoratively.

You just blew all your credibility when you mentioned Knoxville in the same sentence as Birmingham...LOL.

As far as Buckhead and Midtown are concerned, BHM has Five Points South, which is more night clubby--as well as Lakeview, which gets the professionals.

What is contradictory is that you slam the other poster for assuming that ATL is nothing more than its downtown area, but then you brag about Buckhead and Midtown.

I've previously lived in both BHM and ATL--so I'm speaking from a position of authority--and I'd like to hear someone who KNOWS try to name anything (other than the Braves) that could convince me to move to ATL over BHM...

LOL.

The two best things you can mention to sell Atlanta are:

1. It's big.

2. It's not just big, it's getting bigger.

To my mind, you just named off the two best reasons NOT to live there.

I'll pass.

Atlanta aint a real city. Just a bunch of sprawling suburbs with an office park in the middle.

Atlanta is the 9th largest media market in the country.

We in the Atlanta metro area are proud of our city but we aren't ignorant or naive enough to think that it compares to New York, Los Angeles or Chicago.

Those who live in Alabama are deluding themselves if they think that Birmigham can compare to Atlanta. Gwinnett county, one county in suburban Atlanta offers more culture, dining and economic power than any city in Alabama.

Well don't keep us in suspense! What's the reason????
They love to sit in traffic? They love paying big bucks for overpriced housing? They are nuts? Tell me!!!!

Don't forget crime-riddled neighborhoods lorded over by corrupt city government.

Must be the fact that it's close to Six Flags.

What is contradictory is that you slam the other poster for assuming that ATL is nothing more than its downtown area, but then you brag about Buckhead and Midtown.

How is that contradictory? Neither Buckhead nor Midtown are in downtown Atlanta. The poster (maybe you) tried to act like Birmingham offered comparable dining and culture to Atlanta. That is just ignorant. Try to keep up.

I mention Knoxville as when I worked for the TVA the Tennessee people exhibited the same small minded, ignorant attitude for Knoxville as those in Alabama do for Birmingham. I remember at one point an engineer had just returned from Hong Kong and most of the people tried to act like Knoxville had everything if not more than Hong Kong did.

I'm very familiar with Birmingham and you give it too much credit. Five Points south is size of one block of night live in an Atlanta suburb, much less Midtown or Buckhead.

You certainly don't speak from any position of authority. You didn't like Atlanta and a small town like Birmingham is more your speed. Good for you. You are in the minority though.

Ya'll can fight over Atlanta and Birmingham all ya'll want.

I prefer Nashville.

And I know Atlanta and Birmingham well.

Besides, let's get real....this ratings list is incredibly PC.

Diversity?

Do any FReepers really think about that?

I though that PC knee bending was something folks here were against.

Been to Auburn, Phenix City and Mobile. Can't say I thought much of the state, although 'Bama has some friendly people. Reminds me of Central Pennsylvania without the Mennonites and with different accents (Y'all instead of Yunz).

I rate Atlanta above Houston yet below Denver for liveability. I personally need to be near a seacoast.

Well don't keep us in suspense! What's the reason????

The economic opportunity and the very affordable housing. There is a band of upper middle class wealth that stretches from Marietta, through Roswell, Alpharetta, Duluth, Suwannee and Lawrenceville that most country bumpkins that just drive through Atlanta to attend the SEC championship game just don't know anything about.

Place that the country bumpkin Atlanta experts have listed as Atlanta hallmarks are places that people who live here rarely even go.

Not personally do I know anything about Dubuque, IA, but it is ranked #311 out of 331 cities. Sorry if you were looking for better news. A number of other IA cities were ranked way above it.

I'll take Hicksville, every time. Where I live isn't on the list (too small), but the three largest cities in my state are. I wouldn't live there (I have lived in one of them) on a bet, too big!

I loved Atlanta. We're talking about long-term livability.

I won't waste the energy to cut and paste my post, but if you disagree with the fact that Birmingham has almost every shopping and dining option that Atlanta has, then you are showing your ignorance. There may not be a Louis Vuitton or some of the Phipps-type boutiques, but that's why I posted 'almost'. Having said that, I could live to be 101 and never lose a wink of sleep if I never get to shop at Coach or Tiffany.

You probably can't name a single dining theme or cuisine that is available for the average person to visit in ATL that BHM doesn't have.

Take a breath, Sparky...don't get your feelings hurt, okay? Would you be happier at the kid's table, sweetie?

LOL

This thread (my posts included) has gotten ridiculous. Goodnight.
