MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (Aug. 20, 2005) -- Members of the Camp Lejeunes Environmental Management Division joined a group of Boy Scouts from the bases Troop 490 and Jacksonvilles Troop 597 to take part in an environmental awareness project aboard the base Aug. 20.
As the final stage in becoming an Eagle Scout, Daniel Griffith, the project leader, designed, organized and executed the mission in an effort to increase public awareness of the dangers of pollution in regards to storm drains and water run-off.
The project has created publicity on the subject through the utilization of mass media distribution by way of LC-TV10 and The Globe. The information is aimed towards water quality awareness and pollution avoidance. The project also included the group adhering anti-dumping stickers onto storm water run-off drains in the commissary parking lot, around French Creek, and in a few residential areas around base.
I hope itll increase peoples knowledge on base, said Griffith. Little things like washing your car make all the difference. If you wash on the street all the soap runs right into the drain, which funnels into the river. Wash your car on the grass and the ground will filter all the soap out.
Other things people can do to reduce the amount of pollutants that enter storm drains include using environmentally friendly soaps, using fertilizers and other garden products according to their respective instructions, properly disposing of pet feces and having a professional change your oil, according to David Balog, an environmental protection specialist with the environmental assessment section of the Environmental Management Division, Marine Corps Base.
People arent aware that the things they do at home have an adverse impact on surface water quality, said Balog. Its the cumulative effects that are the problem, and what theyre doing is a very important thing.
Griffiths project has made great contributions to the community by warning the area about hazardous materials and their effects on surface water quality, according to David Stanley, the Scout Master with Troop 490.
We want people to know that this is an on-going project, said Griffith. Everyone can help by just doing little things everyday.
For more information on how to contribute to improving the water quality on and around Camp Lejeune, contact Marine Corps Bases EMD, according to Balog.

ooh Rah!, Semper Fi, and a well done for the Scout as well.
My oldest, 14, is a life Scout and needs 3 more MB, and his project.
My Son still needs to figure out what to do for a project.
People who *really* care about the environment, not the left's pretenders.
Similar to an Eagle Project that was done here in Omaha. Scout recruited a sign painting company to assist. Made stencils and the team went through 8 subdivisions in his troop area and they spray painted the storm drains and stenciled the warnings on the concrete. Sign company agreed to inspect annually and repaint if necessary.
Go Scout. Trail the Eagle......blaze the trail and we will follow........on Eagles on...until where Eagles all.
Yo scouter. Brings back some fine memories. What a way to run an Eagle project, on a Marine base. PFC if he makes the grade at Parris Island.
He better get huslting and get it done. Then as soon as the Eagle BOR signs off he needs to tackle earning the Hornaday Conservation Medal, that will keep him busy and in Scouts for sure until he goes off to college.
Scouts doe REAL Conservation and Environmentalism by raising BLISTERS and calluses for the cause - not by filing lawsuits or holding protests.
Gal 6:4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
2Th 2:17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
Also worth 500 point straignt off; if he opens a candidates packet at the USNA towards getting a USNA recommendation for nomination and appointment.
Often the chartering organization will have ideas for a project. My son found out that a single handicap parking space needed to be enlarged as there were now two severely handicapped members of one of the local churches. The handicapped man donated funds to ensure a parking space for himself and his co-congregant.
Roger that. Been of the site for some hours. I just read the lastest article from Michael Yon. I you have not vistied his site in some time you have to read this lastest installment.
No war story could get much gory. Hand to hand combat in Mosul, and a LCT being literally shot three times in an alley as a fairly green enlist and lt just stand there and watch it happen and will go into a shop and shot the scum bag.
BTTT!!!!!!
