Bush declares emergency in Louisiana (Hurricane Katrina)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush declared a state of emergency in Louisiana on Saturday because of the approach of Hurricane Katrina and his spokesman urged residents along the coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate.

Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.

The president's emergency declaration authorizes the FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and to provide appropriate assistance in a number of Louisiana parishes, or counties.

Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.

"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.

And the Libs will blame President Bush. Those morons haven't a clue about simple supply and demand, much less capital required to replace lost facilities for production.

Why didn't the Gov of Louisiana do this earlier?

As far as I know, normally they don't do it

Normally the Gov has the brains to realize to do this first

Apparently, this Gov doesn't

Mary Landrieu's already attacking President Bush - there are 3,000 LA National Guardsmen in Iraq, so according to her any damage or loss of life is all his fault since those Guardsmen won't be back home. I guess there's no one else in LA to help out with storm prpeparations.

I think it's funny that she cites her credentials as a teacher during the 70s and 80s. That's like bragging that you led Mayor Dinkins's anti-crime campaign for the city of New York.

She combines all of Foster's ineffectualism with the leadership ability of dirt. She is probably gonna be the worst governor we ever had.

Gov. declares state of emergency as Katrina heads for Gulf Coast

Gov. declares state of emergency as Katrina heads for Gulf Coast

2theadvocate.com staff report

Gov. Kathleen Blanco has issued a state of emergency for Louisiana as the latest projections for Hurricane Katrina have shifted west to include much of the state's coastline as possible locations for landfall.

"Hurricane Katrina poses an imminent threat, carrying severe storms, high winds, and torrential rain that may cause flooding and damage to private property and public facilities, and threaten the safety and security of the citizens of the state of Louisiana," said a release from the governor's office.

The state of emergency extends from Friday, Aug. 26, until Sunday, Sept. 25, unless terminated sooner.

I was just looking at http://www.wunderground.com

Found this entry on Dr. Jeff Master's blog:

New Orleans finally got serious and ordered an evacuation, but far too late. There is no way everyone will be able to get out of the city in time, and they may be forced to take shelter in the Superdome, which is above sea level. If Katrina makes a direct hit on New Orleans as a Category 4 hurricane, the levees protecting the city will be breached, and New Orleans, which is 6 - 10 feet below sea level, will fill with water. On top of this 6 feet of water will come a 15 foot storm surge, and on top of that will be 20 foot waves, so the potential for high loss of life is great. Given the current track and intensity forecast, I'd put the odds of this at about 20%

"if it hits the rigs"

If it hits rigs??

the chance of catastrophic damage to much of the gulf's oil infrastructure is nearly 100%. Oil will probably hit $70 on Monday or Tue and be in the mid 80s by Sept 15th.

And it wont be like the oil rigs can get up and running when the storm passes. Many will be sunk or damaged beyond repair. Oil production wont return to normanl until 2006.

the question is how much longer can the US economy withstand high energy prices without falling into a deep recession?

I'm just waiting for the follow-up declaration to allow millions of "guest workers" to enter the country to help in rebuilding and repair after the storm ;-)

Prayers for our fellow Americans in New Orleans. Get out now, while you can. This thing was just announced as CAT 5 HURRICANE not two minutes ago.

No kidding. I'll bet we hit $12 gas by Tuesday. Even a freshman trader can make money in a market like this.

Agreed, there's no "if" involved. Rigs are most likely all evacuated by now and the equipment isn't going to fare well in cat 5 winds.

It's a good thing for the folks in Louisiana that the hurricane doesn't have a 'Hispanic' name. If it did, then Dubya would have ignored it (what hurricane problem?!?).

(yeah it's Sunday, I have to work soon so I'm cranking and just fed up with the INVASION)
