Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

Des Moines Iowa had a terrible flood back in '92 or '93.

Yeah, that one sucked. I can state, with complete confidence, that computer monitors float. And a group of people in business suits that haven't showered in 5 days smell just as bad as those not is suits that haven't showered in 5 days.

The data at the Natl Hurricane Center doesn't support that 140mph figure -- maybe it was 140 KTs.

Red beans and rice? Yum!

I had it only once. In Natchez Ms back in '97.

They sliced some Andouille sausage into it too.

What a damned fine meal that was. I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant.

Natchez will soon be getting pummeled by Katrina too.

Hard to believe that. It was up to 170 maybe an hour ago. WWL in New Orleans is reporting 160 RIGHT NOW.

It's still going to be no better a case than a strong 4 which is still a hell of a storm. Fortunately it's moving in overnight so it won't have the heat to continue fueling it.

My family is down there as well. They loaded up all 4 of their cars with everything they could take and got out of the city around 11 a.m. By 1 p.m. they had reached Slidell, heading for family in Birmingham. Traffic was moving at 35 mph. Hopefully, they've gotten there by now. We haven't been able to get through to their cell phones.

What was it about Des Moines that incurred God's wrath? The French name

LOL!

Okay, I grew up in Des Plaines, Illinois. That means. "Of the plains." :)

I guess that's why I've had so many troubles--I've incurred wrath, LOL! ;) (please excuse this very small joke in the face of horror).

p.s., even worse for those of you in Iowa: Des Moines means: "of the monks". :)

That post was further proof that FR longevity is, ipso facto, indicative of nothing other than sporadic internet access over the years.

I think I have a problem with you suggesting bad people are being punished by G-d in this storm.
I'm not going to put up with this any longer.

THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS WAS BY JOHNNY HORTON

FYI

Music and lyrics by Jimmy Driftwood: Jimmy Driftwood was a high school principal and history teacher who loved to sing, play instruments and write songs. Mr. Driftwood wrote many songs, all for the sole purpose of helping his students learn about this battle and other historical events. But this song turned out to be so popular that it won the 1959 Grammy Award for Song Of The Year (awarded in 1960 for musical accomplishments in 1959). Johnny Horton also won the 1959 Grammy Award for Best Country And Western Performance for his recording of this song

Hoping for the best for all those on the GOM coast tonight...

...and the latest central pressure reading is 904 mb -- no real change. This should be giving 160+ mph wind speeds if the sensor can find them.

Yup, central pressure not likely to increase enough to take it out of Cat 5.

Ham and Lima Beans...... I still remember the layer of grease when opening the can. Couldn't eat it. I always lost weight on field problems.

One 'hillbilly', would buy them by the case at the commissary.

"KATRINA!!! THIS GARGANTUAN, ALMOST ELEPHANTINE, COLOSSAL, B*TCH... SHREDDING BODIES AS IF THEY'D BEEN CAUGHT IN A TURBINE... THROWING VEHICLES, SMALL APARTMENT BUILDINGS AND PERHAPS.... EVEN SMALL CHILDREN (WHO'S PARENTS FORGOT THAT THEY WERE LEFT IN THE CAR) HEAVING THEM, IN FACT LAUNCHING THEM, IN A MANNER ONLY SEEN WHEN STEROID-RIDDEN, OLYMPIAN JAVELIN COMPETITORS ARE AT THE VERY PINNACLE OF THEIR SPORT!! MY GOD, MY GOD!! WHO CAN STOP HER!!! WHO I ASK YOU????

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Understand what you are saying - but I will take him over her ANYDAY.
