Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

The 7PM notice from NOAA said

A NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER PLANE REPORTED A MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE OF
904 MB...26.69 INCHES.

Drudge said otherwise, reporting 901 MB.

He was talking about Hurricane Andrew at the time being around 904 MB saying this would break a record.

But if I ever thought I might wish to become religious, the "religious" folk who frequent FR have pretty well convinced me that that's the last thing I'd ever want to do.

You know, Sam, I am a Christ-follower, and sometimes the religious people on this forum convince me that they have quit following Christ and have become more like the Pharisees that persecuted Jesus.

I'm praying right with you.

One of the anchor people and his wife just had a baby and they are evacuating to Nashville right now. Said the hospitals are evacuating or at least the one where his wife was.

It's been hours since I've talked to her. She is with my step-father and friends, hunkering down.

Glad she's not alone!

Maximum sustained winds are near 160 mph with higher gusts... Estimated minimum central pressure is 904 mb.

The storm has not weakened since the last advisory. But it has slowed down to just under 10mph movement, which means it will be over New Orleans and other communities for a longer period.

As Hugo was about to hit, our structural engineer was in a tizzy. He had designed a 60 foot tower to a specified wind load of 125 mph that was right in the path of the landfall. If it fell, he knew there would be an inquiry. If it stayed up, he thought he was going to get fired for using too much steel!

He's just giving the facts. Given that this may be the final hours for some of these people, the straight truth is the least he can do.

Fried cornbread is the best with red beans and rice.

Ohhhh...please no more of this 'red beans and rice' talk. It's past eleven on a Sunday night, and there just ain't nowhere to get none. If this persists, I will have to ATTACK the barbecue joint on Fairfax Dive first thing in the morning.

Waitress: "Hey honey, how 'bout some ham and aigs?"
Riley: "RED BEANS AND RICE. IN A HUGE BOWL. RIGHT THE F*K NOW"

LOL! I don't know if anyone actually knows the true origin of The Green Bean Casserole. I choose to believe that somewhere around mid-USA, one neighbor had a can of green beans. Another a can of soup, yet another those canned onion rings. They were all on the brink of starvation, and decided to pool their food. I guess we can all take comfort that it was green beans and not creamed corn. One of those could be worse.. recipes.

I heard earlier that Hurricane Andrew with all of its destruction had over 920 pressure, and this one isn't even close...which is BAD.

Since it was conceived in the 60's and built in the 70's and refurbished in the 90's ... I have doubts about ability to withstand 200mph. One good thing the roof isn't going to hold rain water, but the shape of the building is strange and makes me wonder.

"Another Camille but in a larger sense and the best we can hope for is an eyewall replacement before landfall."

Unfortunately, there have been reports that this may be in progress already... which would be completed prior to landfall. Here's hoping those reports are wrong.

Sorry, I did not mean it that G-d was punishing people, only why God might be angry.

Sin been around since the dawn of man so God must be perpetually angry

As far as punishment you are sentenced to death the day you are born and if you are headed for heaven than an early death is a blessing not a curse

I wish they had stationed Shep closer to the Superdome. He's too far away at the Royal Senesta to evacuate if he needs to. Keep in mind, the camera crew are also putting their lives at risk.

Thanks! I'm a nurse, there must be great fear at the hospitals if they haven't been able to evacuate.
