Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

"Good thing to check for weapons."

So very true. Hubby was in Slidell last month and heard on the local news that the police's swat team had gone into one of NO's projects to do a test. The fired off 2-3 shots at a time to see how long it would take someone to call 911. They fired over 700 rounds before the first call to 911 came in. No kidding. And rest assured, there ARE guns in that crowd and unfortunately, that's why they have to wait to get in. The saftey of the people in the Dome, especially the children, must come first. If a gun were to go off in the Dome with that many people in it, all hell could break loose.

Yep- and now he's talking to tourists from overseas who are now stuck in the Super Dome.

I remember after 9/11 the recurrent overwhelming thoughts that nothing would ever be the same again. I'm having those thoughts AHEAD of time ...make sense?

One of our Baton Rouge Freepers just reported electricity went out for 20 minutes already--they are going to try to evacuate now.

Prayers appreciated for their safety.

The Superdome

I only wish the Superdome was shaped like "The Igloo" (The Civic Arena) in Pittsburgh. It is shaped like an upside down hemisphere. I'm not crazy about the shape of that building in NO with those winds coming!

Btw, someone earlier had a Freudian slip and called it The Superdoom.

Latest vortex recon has central pressure at 903MB, so she is basically holdig steady state. The wind reading came from the northwestern quadrant at 130kt ... so they are staying with the 160 KT reading of 3 hrs ago since they did not get a reading in the NE quad this time.

Basically what this says is the storm in maintaining its strength at around 165-175 mph winds. Possibly higher. New Orleans is looking at the doomsday scenario unfortunately.

This storm could have epic repercussions for our country. NO may be uninhabitable after this and the storm could concievably change the path of the Mississippi, with the effect of access to the Port of NO being cut off.
