Mayor: Major Breach Flooding and Destroying New Orleans
National
Author: Steve Sabludowsky | 8/30/2005 Home : Business

The City of New Orleans Is Devastated. Those were the words of Mayor C. Ray Nagin and based upon a major breach of a levee system, water is flowing into New Orleans flooding it beyond recognition and could very well destroy New Orleans, Jefferson and the surrounding areas.

In a most frightening interview with WWL TV, Mayor C. Ray Nagin gave the worse-case scenario of events that anyone could possibly imagine. In the beginning of the interview, he stated that New Orleans is devastated.

Of most importance is the breach of the levee between Jefferson and Orleans Parish.

“We probably have 80 percent of our city under water with some sections of our city the water is as deep as 20 feet”.

Both airports are underwater.

The twin spans are destroyed.

The Yacht club is burned and destroyed.

Mayor Nagin also stated he was not sure of the structural soundness of the highrise. He stated that it is possible that the highrise bridge in east New Orleans could be unstable.

This is much more alarming than the CNN reports.

Who would have guessed N.O is on the verge of being flooded by the sea? Oh I forgot, its all Bush's fault - Hurricane Katrina van den Heuvel is the work of dastardly global warming.

No hurricanes in Bush's first two years, must be the work of BL.

I'm wondering how New Orleans will be rebuilt, if at all. It just doesn't make sense to build a city under sea level when the sea is banging on the door.

Of course, Brawley California is a few feet under; but it's got a lot of room between it and the ocean.

I can't sleep; I can't believe that this is only being covered right now on CNN; I can't fathom how this could possibly be anything beyond catastrophic.

And so I pray. It's all that's left to us, and to the citizens of the Crescent City. God save them.

Sounds like the lake is doing what the storm surge couldn't.

Prayers for the folks down there, but I gotta add a bit of a blurb questioning the wisdom of building a major city BELOW SEA LEVEL.

We ain't carp, well most of us ain't!

The highrise bridge is the one crossing the river? He's saying it may not be sound.

I'm not surprised. Louisiana has been holding the mouth of the Mississippi River in place through extraordinary means for decades. Under natural conditions, the Mississippi would meander all over southern Louisiana...but engineers have other ideas. We'll see who wins.

My heart goes out to the residents...

This reminds me of the Chicago Freight Tunnel flood, although that only flooded the basements of downtown buildings. Can't imagine how long it will take to drain an entire city.

I saw that same WWL interview with the Mayor and he seemed to be saying they are in a condition where there is no way to contain the water coming through the levee breach. Two of their largest pumps went offline because they overheated and even if they were back online, it wouldn't help. The mayor said they are just moving the water in a circle.

I hope they can come up with a way to get Tulane Hospital evacuated. I think I heard there are 1000 patients in that hospital. I call on everyone here on FR to contunue to pray for New Orleans and its people.

We've been talking about this on another thread:

Seems it's serious, but not quite like the lake just pouring straight in. Read some of the posts at this link for a better explanation.

...or RE-building a city below sea level, although I'm sure Congress will throw enough money around to do just that.

If the breach is in the canal then they should drop a few buildings into it to dam the canal?

Good idea. Someone else suggested stick barges in the breach.
