Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Live NBC report from Gulfport:

Multistory structures down in a wide swath from the beachfront to in some cases, as much as 1 mile inland.

The video did show, however, that many similar structures are still standing, and in apparantly good shape except for broken windows. I think it will come down to a matter of construction practices and luck as to what buildings took what Katrina dealt out and remain standing, and which structures failed.

"Anybody know if they'll start airlifting people out of there"

Rooftop airlifts; airlifting children/baby pts. out of Tulane Med. Ctr.; evac. critical pts from other hosp. by boat. That's all I've heard regarding (airlift) rescues.

It is disgusting but the honest truth is that they are so guilty in this lack of foresight and planning that they are simply doing a cya. We have to keep hammering that fact to the voters. Democrats in charge will kill you. They have no plans or ideas, they just pander to you to get a vote. Once in power your life is expendable.

From WWLTV-4

Slidell suffers extensive flood damage; Mandeville, Covington wind damage, power loss
09:45 PM CDT on Monday, August 29, 2005

Northshore Bureau Chief Mike Ross says information from the Northshore has been sparse because there is no communication available from that side of the Lake.

He emphasized that no residents are being allowed back in to St. Tammany and anyone attempting to return is being stopped by law enforcement.

He said a handful of angry residents were seen at most exits – unhappy that they couldn’t go home.

St. Tammany Parish officials asked those reading about the situation on the Internet to warn relatives not to return at this time and no certain time has been set at which they would be allowed back.

The visual inspections of Ross and his photographer Mike Bland showed that Slidell has probably endured massive storm surge damage.

He said Lake Pontchartrain overflowed its banks and had chest-deep water from the Lake to the Old Spanish trail exit.

“You can’t tell where the Lake ends and Slidell begins,” he said.

St. Tammany Parish officials plan to send boats into the area Tuesday to assess the damage and look for survivors.

In Covington and Mandeville, there was extensive wind and tree damage and power was out to every place he went.

Mike Ross said more information would be available Tuesday.

If anyone has some information on donating food, clothing etc. to local people or organizations in the Hurricane impact area, please post. I am here in New Jersey and would like to send some items and I know many of my neighbors would like to do the same.

Best wishes for all of you who have suffered in this natural disaster.

Some here take exception to bringing this up.

This is exactly the right time to question why we send billions to other nations yet they do not do squat for us.

Where are rebuliding Iraq to the tune of $300 billion yet we could not build a retainer system to prevent New Orleans from being flooded. Now it will cost more of our tax dollars to rebbuild New Orleans. Iran, Indonesia, France and other nations will not offer a dime to help us.
