NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

snip...

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

snip...

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

snip...

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Yes, all true. I work for an organization that is mainly made up of bankers, so this was really not their scene.

Right.

Reporters in several regions now reporting the looting is at a "frenzie" taking everything that can be taken.

Apparently, they are doing this completely unabated.

That's the first group of bankers I've ever heard of for whom that would not be their scene.

And I work in the banking industry.

The world is becoming more and more of an Ayn Rand novel.

Perhaps it is just that the Randianness of the world is becoming more apparent. For more evidence we should consult the Ministry of Truth.

Declare martial law and give the National Guard orders to shoot looters on sight. New Orleans would be better off with the looting trash eliminated.

Sorry that was outside new orleans people doing that. Ever go watch a Mardi Gras parade where regular New orleans people go. Think not. For it being immoral. My time living in New Orleans as A catholic was fullfilling. Its still a place where among the regular people their Catholic faith is a everyday part of their lives and traditions

Don't get me wrong - I enjoy N.O. cuisine, music and architecture very much. Excellent bookstores as well. My wife and I had an enjoyable vacation there.

It's a great town.

But most conventioneers who book in N.O. are slobs who come for cheap Hurricanes and boobies.

The homies are stealing everything that isn't nailed down.

Careful about using the "homies" description. Petronski will tattle on you for being a racist.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Unless we want to be seen as a laughing stock in the eyes of the world, a hypocrite of a country in various benevolent adventures in various nations abroad trying to bring THEM American 'peace' and 'order' and 'democracy' we better start putting these disgraceful animals, these 'looters' down on site. If it takes helicopter gunships. There is no excuse for this in the United States of America during a human disaster of this proportion. We don't need these looters taking up any more air or space in our precious land.

Speaking of the bookstores that was something I havent even thought of. I would always go to early mass on camp and then hit all those great bookstores to think of that loss is horrible
