Governor: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated Tuesday, August 30, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. — With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

I said I trusted Oscar in a crisis. I didn't say I trusted him completely. ;-)

Where would you have taken them?

Well, perhaps a central evacuation center, if they had bothered thinking about one. Preferably one with a designated hwy leading to it.

There's a real compelling reason to start now. The water is already knee deep around the SuperShelter, there's no power there, and there's no clean drinking water in NOLA.

They should have taken them all out of that soupbowl before the storm. I'd wager that there are community buildings and designated storm shelters in every district in LA that could be used to house people from New Orleans, and they are going to have to figure out some to use now. It should've been part of their original plan.

My guess is that the talent pool in NO and Louisiana politics is pretty shallow.

It will be spun around and blame will be placed on Bush.

Perhaps he could redeem himself by hiring Halliburton to come in and clean up the mess!

Yea, they have been awful.

One thing people like to have during a crisis is a leader with some measure of certainty to him or her. It doesn't even matter if it's sincere - at gut check time, a leader certain of a good outcome has a powerful inspirational impact on the people.

The people didn't get anywhere near that this time.

Our *brilliant* politicians include Huey Long, Eddie Edwards and David Duke.

Would have been nice if she had felt this way as ardently BEFORE the hurricane. It was plain as day then.

Only to those who use their brain and have common sense; she obviously is lacking in both departments....to the detriment of the citizens who live and work in the area.

Katrina was not a Democrat or a Republican why are we discussing this issue as if it were political?

It's up to the brass to ask him, and it's up to him to see if he is willing.

Of course. I hope they swallow their pride, and beg him to help out.

I agree this isn't a political issue. The leadership's lack of ability to cope with this has nothing to do with their party affiliation.

This is what happens when you are elected to a position that your not qualified for....

20/20 hindsight is so wonderful. I searched through your posts and you mostly recommended prayer. These Dims may not be the brightest lights in the firmament, but I'm not sure that pointing that out at this time serves any useful purpose.

The longest me and mine have been homeless for is a few days in a car. I can't begin to imagine a few months. God help them all. This is devastating so many lives.

"Mayor Nagin and Gov Blanco"

These two and others need to be replaced at the polls and soon.

What a bunch of incompetents!

Fox was talking about the president ordering a three star to command the First Army to take command of all rescue and aid attempts.

AHHH if only Patton were around!

No carrier would risk having his assets stripped to the frame, not to mention the likely rioting on board that would occur.

It's not a bad idea. And I'm not sure ships registered in the US (if there are any left) would have any choice if the President commandeered them.
