This stuff requires a lot of pre-planning. How, for instance, do you know where the old and weak are in the city? Who is going to go to their doors and lead them out. That is assuming that they would agree to go.

Kiki, you are ranting about something that honestly does not apply here.

There was supposed to be a plan in place by the city council to evacuate BEFORE the storm hit.
Come to find out, either no plan existed, or it was not enacted in time.
There were school buses available to bus people out, there were greyhound buses available to bus people out.
Instead, no plan was enacted until the PRESIDENT said peopel should leave.
By then, it was too late for the roads to be able to handle high volumes of traffic.

And, despite it being obvious that people should leave, many chose to stay.
CHOSE.
Yes, there are those who could not leave on their own, that's why the aforementioned buses should have been used.

So, in a nutshell, 'poor' has nothing to do with it.

Here's your brake:

Now, are you finished with your tantrum! Sheesh! You know - there ARE some people who couldn't help it. But there were ALSO A LOT of people who thought "Hey - this storm's gonna blow the cops outta here and we can reign in anarchy for a few days!" And now there are heroes from all branches of the military getting freaking shot at trying to help these folks. I DO feel sorry for the ones who didn't have an option, but I think that number is VASTLY overstated. They had several days and two stong legs - heck! They could have hijacked their way OUT of town. So don't give me the whiny crap.

Oh and you asked "How come that the government did not send their big helicopters and airplanes to take people out while they could?"

Because that's not the government's job. Everyone wants the gubmint to hop in and take care of all their troubles and then they get ticked off when they don't get what they think they're entitled to. Whatever the heck happened to a little personal responsibility?? I'm watching this one woman on Fox complaining because she hasn't had a hot meal in 3 days. WHAT?? DOES THE GOVERNMENT NOT PROVIDE PERSONAL CHEFS TO THESE FOLKS?? I'M APPALLED!!!! She is most likely on of the same folks who complain when they can't buy booze with their food stamps.

That said I KNOW there are some who truly can't help it. But I believe they're the minority.

Hey Darks ~ this is MY take on that. The state government wanted to make sure the Fed. Gov't was gonna pick up the cost of the evacuation before they would act. Therefore, it can be said, that the STATE GOV'T of LA was putting $$$ ahead of lives? Do you think that's a correct conclusion?

Sounds like the state waited for 'directive' from above instead of doing their jobs.
So, in essence, yes they put money ahead of lives.
There was supposed ot be a ready plan for such a thing, and it appeared that the city council and the governor relied on wishful thinking to will the hurricane away instead.
The appearance is that they sat blinking like deer in the headlights until it was too late.

It wasn't up to the Federal government to say, "Get out of Dodge." that was up to the local and state governments.

Some FEMA talking head mentioned having set supplies 'in theater' prior to the hurricane.
Funny part, what supplies?
What happened to them?

And I heard Nagins say "We had a plan" repeatedly, but from the showing they did down there, I can't tell you what the plan was.

How do you leave when there is no car to use, when there is no money for a bus, let alone an airplane. How come the rich did not fill their cars with people that had no means? How come that the government did not send their big helicopters and airplanes to take people out while they could?

How come they didn't leave on these?

It's called states rights. It's up to the mayor and govenor to evacuate their people.

Bush had to publicly ask the people to leave because the officials THEY elected were doing nothing.

How do you leave when there is no car to use, when there is no money for a bus,

Mayor Nagin had all those school buses but.......

Nagin was quoted in that local radio interview -- replayed on CNN and other networks -- that there had been a proposal to use school buses. "School buses!" he ranted with disdain, "School buses! Where are the Greyhounds? Why isn't every bus company coming here to rescue these people."

Maybe you should be asking him why he killed all those people with his incompetence.
