New Orleans refugees headed to Astrodome
AP ^ | 8/31

8:40 a.m. HOUSTON -- At least 25,000 of Hurricane Katrina's refugees, a majority of them at the New Orleans Superdome, will travel in a bus convoy to Houston starting today.

They will be sheltered at the 40-year-old Astrodome, which hasn't been used for professional sporting events in years.

Rusty Cornelius, administrative coordinator for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said the refugees would be bused to Houston.

He said specifics of the transport and housing for the refugees were still being worked out with the Red Cross and state government officials.

Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has said she wanted the Superdome _ which had become a shelter of last resort for about 20,000 people _ evacuated within two days.

The situation inside the dank and sweltering Superdome was becoming desperate: The water was rising, the air conditioning was out, toilets were broken, and tempers were flaring.

Don't believe it! George Bush is having them sent off to FEMA death camps!

Refugee shelters are just one small step above internment conditions. I'll pray for these people.

Please don't.

There are, unfortunately, too many tinfoil wackos on the internet who would actually believe something like that.

Wonder where all the "blue state" hospitality is these days? After all, does it seem odd that the blue staters would want these "refugees" sent to a red state. We are afterall all racial bigots, cowboys and hillbillies.

Pay close attention to the plight of these folks.
Use this as an opportunity to learn, and to avoid, if possible, being caught in this condition.

Wait for the crime wave, lawsuits related to the move and a semipermanent 'homeless camp' a la Pali the refugee camps of recent history.

Watch for an incredible amount of Bush bashing to follow...this situation is tailor made for the Dems....

Should it help to understand, 'temporary' trailer camps moved to Alaska for relief of the '64 quake in Valdez have just been recently removed.

Should be interesting politically, heartbreaking for the folks involved.

It is amazing that there are those who would believe Bush, or any American president for that matter, could do some of the stuff they accuse prez. Bush of doing. Some of the things they say over at 'that other site' is not just stupid but plain evil. Some kooks even tried to sah that the president orchestrated 9-11 (oh, and I am not talking about the so-called Arab Street, but some dudes at 'that other site').

I'm sure there are a few people who are already thinking exactly that. GoogleSeach "Raco field" and you'll find our Michigan example of a secret FEMA gulag.

(i live near Ann Arbor so I run into my fair share of nutjobs)

Why don't they just offer to by them a plane, train or bus ticket to the home of their nearest relatives? That would solve a lot of problems.

Excellent.
I was getting low on Soylent Green.
Now that I know there is more coming, I feel safer.

Wait a minute. The HOUSTON Astrodome. That's in Texas. George W. Bush was Governor or Texas. Don't you see whats going on here? Bush caused this hurricane to gather all the minorities in NO into one spot (the Superdome) so he can now ship them off to his home state of evil konservatives to work as slave laborers. How can anyone not see this?!?!?!? /channeling DU.

I'm wondering if these people are allowed to walk out of the Superdome, and go somewhere else of their own accord.

My impression that they can't - they are now prisoners of FEMA.

Does anybody know if they are free to leave?

Unbelievable: with all the closing military bases, with empty hotels further upstate with other possibilities like bringing in trailers we're going to treat our own citizens like third world refugees....unfrigging believable.

Just curious - did they get my house on the distribution list yet? I'm tired of having all that money taken out of my secret Halliburton checks and not getting any soylent green.

That's an excellent idea. Government help will never be as good as private help, and staying at the Astrodome is going to be horrible.
