I'll ask 'em to match to the Salvation Army, if that's OK.

Samaritan's Purse has also sent truckloads of supplies and numerous volunteers.

Shalom.

Yes, help - but do not give to the Red Cross.
Doesn't anyone remember 9/11? The Red Cross refusing to designate donated monies to 9/11 relief?
You give them $100, maybe $10 will go to Katrina survivors, the rest to South Africa!
Give to the local, non-international groups. Spend wisely.

FEMA gets our tax monies and whines for more to the charities? Hmmm - how 'bout more taxes - by any other name smell as well.

Agree. I will never give to the Red Cross again after 9/11, when they hoarded money for emergencies . . . just like this. Let 'em use the 9/11 money now!

American Red Cross also supposedly fired that guy in California because he spoke out against their pro-lesbian week, or whatever it was.

Forget the Red Cross. Too many scandals, too much overhead.

I very much appreciate your sentiment, but from my experience covering disasters and personal experience in SEA, I'd recommend the Salvation Army or Adventist Health Services over the Red Cross.

The RC is VERY top heavy with bureaucracy in DC and when a donation is made for a specific relief, it is NOT guaranteed to go to that area.

I appreciate their work, but, although I am far from a "great" Christian, I think the faith-based organizations do a much better job.

Keep up the good work.

Right. And then we'll find out in two weeks that the Red Cross just happened to decide that now would be a great time to upgrade all their computers, networking infrastructure, and communications gear. And put a nice fat chunk away "in reserve."

No thanks.

I was happy to see that my employer is NOT soliciting donations for the corrupt Red Cross. They have chosen two other charities to name in an e-mail soliciting donations which will be matched, and have included an avenue for donations in kind as well. Due to established policy, employees who choose to donate to the Red Cross and who have not already reached the matching donation limit for the year, will also have their donations matched, as for any other qualified non-profit.

Ya'll are a bunch of heartless b@stards.  Don't you know there's high ranking execs at Red Cross who are counting on donations this disaster raises for big Christmas bonuses?  That diamond necklace for the wife or trip to the Orient isn't going to pay for itself. Times have been tough post 9-11 with all the scandals and what not. The gravy train has arrived!  Now ante up!

Apologies for naming Red Cross. I share your concerns about what they did in the past. I should have said: Ask your employer to match contributions to hurricane disaster relief.

Unfortunately, Owl, you're right. On 9/11, they immediately started to squirrel away money that they promised would go to the victims and relief in NYC. And part of that stash was to keep employee salaries coming.

I just wrote a large check to the Red Cross today, and Saturday, I'll be at a leadership meeting at my church to hopefully organize a small cadre of people who can get away, to travel to one of the effected areas and try to help some of these people. I would encourage everyone to do the same.

I remember what happened with the money sent to the Red Cross during the 9-11 disaster. If I remember correctly among other things the RC allocated money to go toward the defense of those muslims detained in connection with terrorism.

I can't bring myself to send them a dime. The SA will get my money and hopefully it wil go to thoe who need it and not all these heathens stealing 100 tennis shoes while their neighbors are dying.
