Sept. 1, 2005 | Two photographs of New Orleans residents wading through chest-deep water unleashed a wave of chatter among bloggers Wednesday about whether black people are being treated unfairly in media coverage of post-hurricane looting.
One of the images, shot by photographer Dave Martin for the Associated Press, shows a young black man wading through chest-deep waters after "looting" a grocery store, according to the caption. The young man appears to have a case of Pepsi under one arm and a full garbage bag in tow. In the other, similar shot, taken by photographer Chris Graythen for AFP/Getty Images, a white man and a light-skinned woman are shown wading through chest-deep water after "finding" goods including bread and soda, according to the caption, in a local grocery store

It's not looting. It's a "purchase with payment deferred plan"...
When the Astrodome turns "unlivable" then Houston better be ready to deal with this.
Oh, I see.....if you can eat it, it's not looting, it's surviving.
Phew! For a second there I really thought it was stealing.
If you have to break glass to get something, that is not "finding."
To borrow a phrase from another posting, they are not looters, they are "undocumented consumers".
Could there be a larger than normal amount of those affected are having trouble with withdrawal and drug related issues? So if they can't get their CRACK, would this be some of the root of the irritable issues?
I agree that it is stealing but I think it is funny that out of all the coverage TWO captions on the internet labled the black man as a looter and the white woman as someone who FOUND her bread. TWO little captions and Salon.com and KOS are all upset at the racial bias.
Make that the "payment optional plan".
nobody knows how much the photographers / reporters who supplied info for the captions saw. So maybe they did see the looter looting and the finders finding. Or maybe the caption writers got tired of writing 'looting' all the time and decided to break up the monotony.
would you prefer hunting or gathering?
EXACTLY!! That was the point of me posting the salon,.com artoicle. All the liberal blogs and websites are boo hooing about a couple of captions on the internet and they are crying racism, meanwhile all of New Orleans is in a crisis.
That is why I titled my thread whiny and petty!
The Big Easy is an apropos saying in this case, no?
Ping.
The only surprise in this situation is that the Associated Press, in this instance, resorted to honest reporting and used the word "looter." LOL.

No I think some of you are not even reading the salon.com article.
I am pointing out how salon.com and KOS are whining about a couple of captions on the internet claiming the captions are racially biased meanhwile New Orleans is destroyed!
This is what the libs worry about..politically correct terminalogy in the middle of a major crisis...hence the PETTY comment in the title of this thread I created.
Wonder how long it took that photographer to find a white looter, if she is in fact a looter?
Um, the woman in the "finding" picture appears to be black.
