Too bad those weren't moved to higher ground last week. That's a lot of buses.

When Mayor Nagin was asked about commandeering school busses for evacuation he said that was a silly idea and that what they needed was Greyhound busses.

Idiot.

"SHE PROBABLY DOESN'T READ FR!"

Funny you should say that...just last Saturday a.m. I was reading a local column while I was waiting in line at the barber shop. In addition to discussing Governor Edith Bunker-Blanco's abusive use of state aircraft for personal uses, there was something about the demo's establishing their own online presence to counter the Republican-Right's stronghold on talk radio and the web. There was some sort of leaked email in this regards and how our state's leadership would have to try really hard to ensure this all looked like a grassroots sort of thing.....

When Katrina hit us, my area probably should have evacuated but the storm was expected to hit much further north and move due west. Instead, it came on shore, moved south and hit S. Florida instead. Over 1 million people without power, flooding etc.

Yeah, we thought she was going to hit us. As it was we were without electricity for 2 days, altho part of the problem was that the repair crew had to wait for a hive of bees to be removed before they could fix the problem! Hope you didn't fare too badly. susie

"They didn't have cars - unless you think they might be able to walk out of harms way in 48 hours."

I was thinking about that a few days ago. My wife and I could probably walk out of danger in that 48 hours, but we're healthy and reasonably fit.

An awful lot of folks aren't healthy and fit who were left in NO. Some were, of course, but a lot weren't. I was thinking about my 84 year old father in law. He's blind, has had a stroke, and can barely walk to the bathroom. Without help, he couldn't get to the corner.

Of course, that's why my wife and I moved from California to Minnesota...to be near the in-laws as they grow older, so they would have help.

Still, not everyone can walk away from an impending disaster.

All those schoolbusses now sitting wheel deep in water should have been mobilized when they did the initial evacuation, along with every city transit bus and the pickup locations widely publicized.

That is the failure of the N.O. administration. They had the means to evacuate many thousands more, but didn't bother.

I'm sure some didn't have cars, but if you look around NO on the news there are LOTS of cars parked around. No idea who they belonged to, but it still appears many with cars did not leave. Imagine if EVERYONE who was able to take care of themselves did so, there would be comparatively fewer who could not, so we would actually be able to handle it.

Think about it, Mayor denies he has authority to declare an evac order. Why? Was he denied the authority by someone with more authority? Possibly. The Gov is next up the chain of command. Why did the Gov delay the evac order? Who denied her the authority to give the evac order? Next up the chain is Senator Mary L.

The Mayor and the Gov are executive. They do not report to Senator Mary L., who has influence because she is politically powerful, but has no executive authority.

I guess the key work is "finally"--- this "governor" has been asleep at the switch for some time.

Louisiana---New Orleans----disappointing french attitude. I guess Mardis Gras demands lots more planning and energy than dealing with natural disasters.

A 5 hour ride in a school bus --the worst kind of hell.

Not if NOLA's in your rear view!

There was a picture on on of the Katrina threads that showed a parking lot FULL of USABLE school busses that are UNUSABLE school busses now. Every bus SHOULD have been moved to staging area for the evacuation. It is painfully obvious that it was not done. Not even thought of. Too little, too late. Blanco sure has great 20-20 hindsight. Should have had 20-20- forsight. 48 hour advanced warning and nothing was done. How many could have been evacuated? We'll never know.

Prayers and support for those affected by Katrina.

Mayor just released a statement. Said there are at least 50,000 survivors still needing to be evacuated from NO.

Wow! In the video shots I haven't seen any boats or rafts. I keep thinking that there must be a few flat bottom boats and inflatable rafts somewhere in the state of LA. I also keep thinking that there must be a few LA citizens willing to loan them out or even pilot them to bring people out. Maybe they can't get through but the streets look like canals to me.

Another question is, why would anyone STAY if they had transportation! I guess looting has a strong attraction to a lot of the former city of New Orleans residents.

Guess the Locals were too busy pointing fingers to actually do their JOB the last 5 days.

Ask her what she was doing.

I lost power for 2 days as well. We did get quite a bit of wind, and more damage than I thought for a Cat 1 storm. Part of the problem with South Florida is that because of Andrew, we regard anything under a Cat4 as wimpy. Katrina taught us a lesson, and now, twice..
