Yet the myth that the President was asleep at the wheel persists.

"President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation"

And 70% heeded that appeal.
Think of the loss of life if that decision had been left totally to the Governor and Mayor.

Considering how long it took the National Guard to arrive, this 'myth' seems to have some basis in reality.

I think not. Word from people that were in NO is that the govenor wouldn't allow the Red Cross in NO. That's very believable since she didn't have enough sense to order an evacuation.

The General Evacuation Guidelines on Hurricane Evacuation at the above site gives these instructions if you do not have transportation:

If you need transportation, try to go with a neighbor, friend, or relative.

That's it. No suggestions for handicapped, elderly, etc. Amazing. I would be interested in hearing what was being said on TV and radio.

Can you cite any prior disasters involving hurricanes where the National Guard has arrived in a quicker fashion?

Bush: Move To 'Safe Ground'

Nagin exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines have already canceled all flights.

Gov. Blanco said President George W. Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

Speaking Sunday, Bush said that he "cannot stress enough the dangers this hurricane poses to Gulf Coast communities." "I urge all citizens to put their own safety and the safety of their families first by moving to safe ground," he said.

WDSU meteorologist Dan Thomas said the dangers from the hurricane cannot be overstated.

"I've told some people in the newsroom, I think this is going to be the scariest moment of your life," he said.
