GULFPORT, MS – Mississippi Power employees and outside crews were able to turn lights on in numerous parts of the company’s service area Thursday, three days after the region was slammed by Hurricane Katrina.

“We were able to restore service to small pockets along the Coast and around Hattiesburg, which were among the hardest hit areas,” said Kurt Brautigam, company spokesman. “It was a real lift for everyone to see some visible signs of success. We expect to see more progress today.”

In a time where good news is hard to find, here's a little ray of sunshine that things may be heading in the right direction for those in the Gulf Coast region.

Well I just asked this on the Alabama thread. I suspect all but the coast will be powered up very soon in Mississippi. I also expect much progress is being made in LA outside of Orleans Parish.

I agree.

The last areas to get power will be the areas very close to the beaches - the ones that got pulverized.

I doubt there'll be electricity there until new homes and businesses are built.

But so far, it seems to be a good start.

Add information to the title so that that it shows the thread
has different information. With the same title it shows up on search as a duplicate.

New damage assessments indicate more than 750 miles of lines are on the ground across Mississippi Power’s system. Nearly 5,000 poles will have to be replaced, and thousands more repaired. Estimates suggest that nearly 70 percent of the company’s facilities suffered significant damage, especially in the hard-hit Coast and Pine Belt divisions. Some areas have been totally destroyed, and the company has estimated it may take up to four weeks to restore service to all customers who can receive it.

The scope and scale of this disaster is only beginning to be understood.

Many utility line crews are and have been staging in Baton Rouge, my brother's garage with a Illinois utility has sent one half of their equipment and volunteers already. But the logistics are hampering their ability to do their jobs. No drinking water, no fuel, no where to sleep or clean up and no food. The area is completely devastated. When I spoke to my brother last night, he said that the utility was trying to organize supplies and fuel to convoy to the area.

It's very tough duty. Especially since all relief is being directed to the victims and evacuees. Yet they don't lack for additional volunteers to relieve the originals guys, even retired linemen.
