Leaders of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 versus leaders of Hurricane Katrina in 2005
Posted on 09/03/2005 1:08:51 PM PDT by Big Steve
For those who lived in SOuth Carolina or are still living in SOuth Carolina now, we all remember Hurricane Hugo back in 1989. It was the most costly natural disaster in US history until Andrew hit 3 years later. Now Katrina has passed Andrew as the most costly natural disaster in history. Going back to Hurricane Hugo, we had two leaders in former South Carolina Governor Carroll Campbell and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley during this crisis. How would you rate them compared to the incompetent leader of the current Governor of LA Kathleen Blanco and NO Mayor Ray Nagin? Campbell is a Republican and Riley is a Democrat, yet they showed great leadership during our time in crisis.

It was the chief of police who told his men that they didn't have a place to put arrested looters and so the cops should just beat them up.
It seemed to work because I don't remember looting as a big problem during Hugo.

Since the year was 1989 I assume President George H.W. Bush also reminded them way ahead of time to prepare for emergency evacuation. And instead of sitting on their asses they actually did something (unlike the Louisiana "leadership").

I thought Beasley was Gov. He made a few mistakes on the evac portion, but the real star was Riley. I have no use for his politics but he did a good job in the aftermath.
I was living on James Island at the time. More than Riley, the star for me was Allstate. The way they handled the whole was masterful from my perspective.
I think one Major thing that helped Charleston was that people from all over the country "love" Charleston and mourned our losses with us. I imagine there are many people that "like" NOLA but I just don't think that people feel the same way.
Had it not been Charleston, I think things would have been mush more difficult.

Waddabout Carmen Bunch, mayor of Isle of Palms, ordering NG troops to fire on residents swimming the ICW at night, trying to get to their property in defiance of here orders. She was trying to protect them from sewerage, snakes and propane tanks. 'Course now no one gives a sh|t about the disposable mega-mansions lining the front beach.

Was that Ruben James? That man knew criminals and crime control.

DHS Organization
How does the mission of the Department of Homeland Security differ from those of other agencies?
The new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has three primary missions: Prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters.
