The Dems will be fighting Roberts like the devil, now.

Expect a filibuster.

I don't see why this would trigger a fillibuster of Roberts. what the Dems will do is try and delay Roberts, and will ask for the 2nd Justice to be named before the vote on Roberts, so they can get a "package deal". Bush must resist that.

Its going to be a wild political season now for sure. Wild.

Politics aside, prayers for Rehnquist - he fought so long, and I am sure he was fighting to stay alive until Roberts was confirmed.

I disagree Brilliant. I think this will put the skids on the democrats plan to go after Roberts on Tuesday when his hearings are scheduled to begin.

If Democrats continue their outrageous atttttempt to portray Roberts as some kind of conservative bogeyman, while the country is going through the hurricane, they will lose all credibility

I expect Roberts to get a lesser fight because of this. I say this sadly as I think it will come at the expense of Rehnquist's replacement (think gang of 14). I hope that the Pres., and more importantly congress sticks by his/their guns on this. Prays out to The Chiefs family in this their hour of need. His suffering is over.

The 'Rats will be completely unhinged at the Roberts hearings; I think we can anticipate a boatload of barely disguised anti-Catholic bigotry and probably other nasty critters on display.

Expect a filibuster.

Yes...the RATs will claim "extraordinary circumstances" and the RINOs will all nod in agreement.....

Barring something unexpected, I don't expect that to happen. The 'Rats just don't have enough on him.

As for the current vacancy, look for Michael Luttig to be nominated, either for Chief Justice or to succeed Antonin Scalia as Associate Justice.

You say, The Dems will be fighting Roberts like the devil, now.

No way will the Dems fight Roberts nomination.
He's a moderate Republican.
He's certainly not very right wing.
Roberts will pass very easily.

If Bush choses a right winger to replace Rehnquist.
Thats where the battle will be.
The Democrats will fight tooth and nail to prevent that person from getting on the Supreme court.
