Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.
A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.
"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.
Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.
My prayers and condolences are extended to his family and friends. May they look to the Lord to find help and comfort in this time of need. Prayers also for President Bush as he searches for a sucessor in this most important job.
Rest in peace, God be with the family.
I wonder if Carville's fax machine has exploded yet?
Oh hell... Now it's really going to hit the fan.
RIP, Justice Rhenquist.
He is at peace with his wife now.
God rest his soul. Amen
We need more people like him, ones that don't morph the Constitution to their own socialist ideals.
LOL! I was wondering how they were going to blame President Bush for this, too.
Oh Lord.. RIP Judge Rehnquist.
I still love his line to the Lamestream Media...
LSM: "Are you going to retire?"
Rehnquist: "That's for me to know and you to find out."
Where's Howard Dean?
we remember before you today your faithful servant William;
and we pray that,
having opened to him the gates of larger life,
you will receive him more and more into your faithful service,
that, with all who have faithfully served you in the past,
he may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord,
Prayers to his family.
"Bush, Jews Blamed"
Prayers for his family. I grew up in the same city where the Chief Justice was from, Shorewood Wisconsin.
As for his replacement, President Bush it's good to be king.
Clarence Thomas for CJUS.
Very, very sad. Rest in peace Justice Rehnquist and may God comfort your family.
Did they get this wrong, seeing reports that he died at a Northern Va hospital?
Rest in peace.
How long before the jackass machine cranks up to full speed?
Well, Bush supports God. God allegedly made humans mortal. Rehnqueist died because he was mortal. Therefore it's Bush's help for supporting God and not working to overthrow him.
Because, after all, at most all Saddam Hussein had were a couple of canisters of sarin, whereas God has killed millions of people in the last couple of years with natural disaster. Yet Bush has nothing but good words to say for this tyrant!
I hope the next Chief doesn't emulate the gold stripes on the robes. Sorry, Chief...Into paradise may angels lead thee.
WOW. Prayers for his family...he was truly one of the great legal minds of our times.
You left out Karl Rove.
Boy, is that an understatement or what? Let the games begin.
I am sorry to hear this and would like to extend condolences to his family, friends and to the judges and staff an the Supreme Court who will surely miss him.
I have to admit, those things made him look like a Starfleet Admiral...
It is not GW Bush's fault,in reality its a good thing.GW can appoint someone now. What a hoot
The good Judge tried to do his duty for as long as he could.
May God rest his soul and comfort his family.
With prayers for his family and our President that he may he be guided in his choice.
He will be remembered most for designing and constructing the custom robe and stage he used in the House chamber for the impeachment of the 42nd President of the United States.
I suppose I would do the same, especially if people were thinking I should "retire".
Potential DU Rant: "Karl Rove poisoned Rehnquist to divert attention from Bush's miserable failure with Hurricane Katrina."
I'm happy he died at his home. Its got to be easier that way.
Indeed. God rest his great, wise American soul. We owe him a debt of gratitude. Till the end, he tried to do what was right for the United States, voting against Kelo.
I now find myself desperate about what's going to happen. Ann Coulter is not a Roberts fan. I hope that he's conservative, but more so, I hope that the next one that President Bush appoints is infinitely more conservative. I don't remember who it was, but David Brooks had expressed a wish in his column about what the nominee should be and then he said 'like xyz' - can't remember who it was.
I'm comforted tonight by the thought that the Rehnquists know what a great American their father was. Certainly, we at Free Republic won't soon forget.
RIP Judge Rehnquist.
Whats the connection to Howard Dean?
When it rains, it pours...
I am so sorry to hear of the news. When is the last time a justice died in office? It must be decades.
Now we are going to have another huge battle. Beyond Roberts, the successor to Rehnquist will have a tough time getting through.
With Katrina, the Roberts hearings, and now this news, poor Cindy Sheehan will be all but forgotten. ;)
Rehnquist fought until the end. Obviously one hell of a man.
I was startled to see this on Fox a few minutes ago. I didn't know he'd suddenly begun to fail. Rest in peace, Justice Rehnquist, and may God comfort your family.
May his soul, and the souls of all the Faithful departed, rest in peace.
