Associated Press ^ | Sep 03 11:11 PM US/Eastern

Posted on 09/03/2005 8:17:02 PM PDT by zahal724

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.

A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.

"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.

Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.

President Bush should immediately nominate Ruth Bader Ginsberg to be the new Chief Justice. She has such tremendous knowledge of and respect for the Constitution. Wow! This is some good crack!

LOL!

Surely he'll nominate either Justice Thomas or Justice Scalia. I'd be delighted with either.

Get a grip Fox!!!..the US has had worse things happen. We survived a civil war and a revolution.
We can survive Katrina and the death of a conservative Supreme Judge.

I was wondering how they were going to blame President Bush for this, too.

A thing you don't know about him, as conservative as he was, his admin assistant was extremely liberal, but she is a great legal mind.

Rhenquist knew talent, he also knew that when it comes to the constitution, brains and talent replace ideology every time.

Rest in peace.

Ginsberg is a good person, and a very smart person. She won't be elevated, but she is one of the good people in government, whether you agree with her or not.

My father who was a clerk in the federal court said that because Rehnquist died his replacement will supercede that of O'COnnor who will retire when her replacement has been confirmed.

That's very interesting. Is it because SDO can be asked to continue serving until her replacement is named, but the court can't meet without all 9 justices?

(By the way, I like your home page. Your house is beautiful!)
