The research already done by his staff since Justice O'Connor's retirement announcement should make it easy for President Bush to decide who he'll nominate to replace Justice Rehnquist. I imagine he won't make the announcement for a week or two, out of respect for Justice Rehnquest's family.

Is there any protocol that requires him to wait for Judge Roberts to be confirmed before he announces the next nominee? Certainly the Democrats will drag both proceedings out as long as possible. And if President Bush announces a nominee in less than two weeks, the Dems will squall about his lack of respect for Rehnquist.

My father who was a clerk in the federal court said that because Rehnquist died his replacement will supercede that of O'COnnor who will retire when her replacement has been confirmed.
