General roars into action in New Orleans

ATLANTA - When the cavalry finally arrived in New Orleans to help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, a cigar-chomping three-star general led the way.

That was Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, commander of the 1st Army, based at Fort Gillem in Atlanta. Normally he oversees training for all deploying troops on the East Coast.

For the time being, the Louisiana native is the man in charge on the front line in New Orleans. He is also coordinating military relief efforts for all storm-ravaged areas along the Gulf Coast.

Honore is winning over even some of the government's harshest critics, including New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who blasted the Bush administration's initial response to his city's disaster.

"He came off the doggone chopper, and he started cussing, and people started moving," Nagin told a radio station. "I give the president some credit on this. He sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done."

Honore and thousands of National Guard troops rolled in Friday and Saturday, bringing food, water and a sense of safety.

The general was careful to show he was leading a humanitarian relief mission in his home state.

"Put those ... weapons down!" he yelled to troops rolling in on trucks.

He repeatedly strode up to soldiers, and sometimes the local police, telling everyone to point their guns down, reminding them they were "not in Iraq."

Honore is from Lakeland, La., northwest of Baton Rouge. He also has a daughter and other relatives who live in New Orleans, according to CNN.

His family could be dead and this soldier would still do his job.

Damn right; lead, follow, or get the Hell out of the way. Looks like NO mayor and LA governor decided to get out of the way.

And I also heard the mayor say something to the effect that if they want him (meaning the John Wayne dude) to take his (the Mayor's) place, it was okay with him (the Mayor). Sounds like the first good plan the New Orleans' mayor had.

Isn't it amazing that in a crisis strong leadership is demanded by the Women folk and the public. The touchy feely I feel your pain leadership is not what you need. When lives are at stake Strong Male Leadership is what the public expects.

Girly Men take a hike this is a job for "Real Men". And the Media is wanting to know when does the Military arrive? The hated Military when things are going well, we are not at war and we don't feel threatened. But let the crap hit the fan and the question is where is the Military?

Uh huh, methinks we have a Storming Norman camera/headline wannabe in the making here.

The NG is under control of the LA gov, she issues statements she has ordered the NG is to go into NO locked and loaded with orders to shoot to kill looters. Along comes General Honore, (always with the MSM cameras rolling) yelling put those guns down. So, who in the hell is really in charge in NO?

That much I know. I was just hoping he didn't have the extra baggage of personal loss or worry.

It doesn't hurt that the John Wayne dude is an African-American born in New Orleans, but I guess that had nothing to do with the choice.

He's my new favorite general. He was on Fox News, and the anchor mentioned how the U.S. couldn't use regular army for Law Enforcement because of posse comitatus. Then, he complimented her on getting the right answer and said he liked journalists who did their homework. Very, very amusing guy even if he might be a grandstander.

No, you point your weapon at an enemy not a refugee.

When they go into town, then weapons should be loaded.

I think we'll find that Nagin is one of the "people on the street."

I wonder how many plasma TVs he's got stashed in his house?

As the husband of a wife who is strong and self-made, I can say this: Govornor, you are a disgrace to every strong American woman who has worked hard, raised a family and plants their feet firmly and makes decisions daily on the management of their family. Get lost.
