State and local officials did not inform top federal officials early on of the deaths and lack of food among hurricane victims in the Superdome or convention center, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said yesterday.

Mr. Chertoff said neither he nor Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Michael Brown was told of the deteriorating situation in New Orleans until Thursday night.

There was no one to tell them. The Mayor was in Baton Rouge with his buddies and the gov was busy making excuses why she wasn't responsible.

New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin was asked by MSNBC news why the city did not try to help poor people get out of New Orleans after he issued the mandatory evacuation. Instead of providing transportation, Mr. Nagin said remaining residents were directed to the Superdome "as a shelter of last resort, but the help never came."

Huh?

Why is it people aren't talking about the fact that it was the local government that told people to go to the Superdome thereby making the safety of those people THEIR responsibility?

Thursday Soledad O'Brien was giving Mike Brown a really hard time about the people in the Convention Center and he raised his voice and said,
"Soledad WE DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS ANYBODY IN THE CONVENTION CENTER UNTIL TODAY. As soon as we found out we sent food and water over there"

The press release from Nagin's office regarding those who were to be sheltered at the Superdome was that the site was meant for those with "special needs" with 1 caretaker allowed to accompany that individual, it was to be a refuge of last resort and that those seeking shelter there (SD) should bring food and water to last 5 days.

See Nagin's statements at http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/ - section entitled Nagin said slow response cost lives' - is he admitting it?
