A week after Hurricane Katrina, engineers plugged the levee break that swamped much of the city and floodwaters began to recede...
Sheets of metal and repeated helicopter drops of 3,000-pound sandbags along the 17th Street canal leading to Lake Pontchartrain succeeded Monday in plugging a 200-foot-wide gap, and water was being pumped from the canal back into the lake. State officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say once the canal level is drawn down two feet, Pumping Station 6 can begin pumping water out of the bowl-shaped city.
Some parts of the city already showed slipping floodwaters as the repair neared completion, with the low-lying Ninth Ward dropping more than a foot. In downtown New Orleans, some streets were merely wet rather than swamped.

NOT good enough!
That will be the new Democratic talking point!....lol
Bush should have anticipated the break and fixed it before it broke with his own bare hands ... [/sarcasm]
I'm confused - it looked as though the water they were pumping (pic's on tv) was being pumped from the city INTO the canal. The article talks about drawing down the water in the canal before another pump can be started - what's that mean? If they are pumping water into the canal and the canal's not draining into the lake, then the canal water level will rise. How are they drawing down the canal?
Will someone with a working brain please explain?
I don't have a working brain...but AP gets it WRONG again. It wasn't the dammmmm Levee! It was a break in the wall, but the levees were ok.
I think they have to build a dike around the pump station and dewater it before the big pumps can be started. The canal itself is connected to the lake. I've been across it before.
The pump you saw running on tv is a temp, i think.
hmmm - ex-hippie, no working brain -- i know what you were doing in the 70's!!
Thanks - I thought I had lost what little's left of my cognitive function.
What!?! When did they release the Environmental Impact Statement on this levee project? Do they have the proper toxic waste discharge permits? This is an outrage! There are new undocumented, endangered species lving in that wetland area! They are destroying their natural habitat! (end envirowacko mode)
Hey, maybe they could have used some of the hundreds of school buses Mayor Nitwit and Governor Blank-O chose to let flood in their parking lots instead of evacuating the city's poor.
BUT WHERE WAS GEOOORGEEE?
do you think I could get a job with Mayor Nagin's office?
None of them have working brains and they get paid a lot!
I really like the busses in the breech idea..they're wasted anyways.
Do you have a link ?
I don't have the link offhand but if you go to the levee boards budget link you will see they had casino revenues shown. I saw that earlier. So this report makes sense.
Looking for it. Google only turns up a post of it on AOL.
Bush's fault.
Mary Landrieu wants to thank all the Democrat politicians in Louisiana who made it possible.
Why do other dikes (levees, canal embankments) have earthen BERMS on their outsides and are NOT just few-feet-thick walls with no supporting structure that seem to topple-over easily?
Dumbdumbdumb.
