Chief Justice Rehnquist's pallbearers included Judge John G. Roberts, who had been nominated by President Bush to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Judge Roberts, who was once a law clerk for Chief Justice Rehnquist, has now been selected by the president to succeed Mr. Rehnquist as chief justice of the United States. Confirmation hearings for Judge Roberts will likely begin next week.

Not only is the Chief Justice dead, but apparently so is reverence and decency (at least on this thread).

Please forgive me.

You got me on that one. I have no idea what Souter is up to. I don't think that it's he's too grief stricken to attend.

Souter is in New Hampshire I heard. Why isn't he paying his respects? Protecting his land?

According to conglomerate.org
David E. Salisbury finished #2 in the Stanford class of 1952.

They were 1 and 3 in the Stanford Law Class of 1952 right? I wonder who Number 2 was and how they feel about not making it to the Supreme Court. Actually it is conceded by all of the members of the 1952 class that Rehnquist was #1 in the class of 102. O'Connor is alleged to have been #3 but there are apparently 99 students who have laid claim to the #2 slot.
That would mean that O'Connor finished last.

I don't know about Rehnquist, he was a very private person. But either Barry Goldwater or Ronald Reagan would very likely have enjoyed the quips, on their own threads.

Souter's probably packing up his belongings since the town might take his farm through eminent domain. Hehehehehe. But he should have gone back to DC for the funeral. His absence is shameful.

As I've said elsewhere, Souter's sitting on his front porch with a shotgun in case anyone tries to "eminent domain" his property.

Slightly more seriously....
Maybe Souter just doesn't want to deal with all the people who would look at the coffin, then turn and look at him, and shake their heads.

The two of them dated when they were both much younger. It's true. Is this true? seriously? So how come the media did not exploit this ratings nugget? (this is out of character for the medial)
