Chief Justice Rehnquist's pallbearers included Judge John G. Roberts, who had been nominated by President Bush to fill the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Judge Roberts, who was once a law clerk for Chief Justice Rehnquist, has now been selected by the president to succeed Mr. Rehnquist as chief justice of the United States. Confirmation hearings for Judge Roberts will likely begin next week.

David Souter should be ashamed of himself.

Souter must have had some serious issues with Rehnquist. In the last day or so, all of the other Associate Justices released statements about the passing of The Chief. Souter did not.
Now he stays away from this. And he probably won't be at the funeral tomorrow.
It would be interesting to know what the other Justices think of Souter's total lack of class, and will it affect their future relations?

I would expect to see Senator Schumer right up there among the first mourners, since he made such a point of it a few days ago.
(But NOT to delay the confirmation hearings of Justice Roberts, mind you...) </s>

I understand that Rehnquist and O'Connor dated once or twice in the earlier years.

Not only is the Chief Justice dead, but apparently so is reverence and decency (at least on this thread). Ditto.
RIP.

This is clearly a tremendously emotional day/moment for John Roberts. It would be in any event, but his nomination to take his obviously revered mentor's place no doubt has ramped up the emotional level for him .

And for Sandra Day, too.
I can't imagine the emotion of having dated the CJOTUS and serving with him for so many years and then having to say goodbye
To: AmishDude
Hmm, what do you know.
Thanks for the info.

He also didn't even make a statement. What a classless moron.

You're right. Watching Sandra Day O'Connor today is very much like watching Margaret Thatcher at RR's services. It is so sad to watch an elderly person experience the grief of the loss of such a close and dear friend. I've seen it before with people who were not famous, but just as close, and it's very affecting.
