We were awakened this morning by news out of New Orleans, five days after the devastating hurricane passed through the city, that the city is still plunged in darkness and most of it is remains flooded. But, that wasn't any different from the day before. What was different was the news that police officers are walking off the job, gunshots are common throughout the city and fires are beginning to erupt at various locations. Gangs of 7-10 men, both armed and unarmed, are roaming the city killing and stealing, some out of pure instinct to survive, some to take advantage of the situation. This is happening in a city that had advance notice of an impending disaster and 80% left for safety. The other 20% are now trying to survive.
In California a major earthquake would make the scope and scale of what happened in New Orleans seem like a minor incident. There obviously would be no warnings, and the area devastated would be at least 10 times that of New Orleans affecting as many as 10 million people or more.
The lessons learned from New Orleans are:
1. Keep enough food and water to last for a minimum of one month.
2. Keep a lot of flashlights and batteries around along with a couple of portable radios. Keep a well stock first aid kit as well. Keep a portable stove for cooking and boiling water.
3. Own guns and plenty of ammunition. Know how to use them and that includes everyone in your family old enough to handle a firearm.
4. Be prepared to use your firearms in defense of your life and the lives of your family members and neighbors.
5. Share what you can with your neighbors and form a neighborhood security team to keep unwanted people out until government authorities have secured the area.
6. When politicians tell you that only law enforcement and police should own guns in today's "modern society", tell them to go to hell... or New Orleans. There's no difference between either at this point in time.

Nice reminder - just counted my ammo - only 250 rounds of 9mm and forget where I put the 7.92 for the Mauser. ;-)
Well if it was, thanks for reposting it. Food and water for one month, vs 3-5 days. That will have to include MRE's. If one has to leave and carry supplies, water will be heavy enough, never mind cans of soup and spaghetti.

It's no skin off their nose if some thug kills you. Instead, it's a great excuse for them to ask for more laws, taxes and government powers.
The powers that be tell us it's a matter of when, not if, San Francisco will be hit with "the big one". So if it happens next week, will it be Bush's fault?
What is California doing about it to make sure it doesn't happen? And when will people realize that Mother Nature happens, the feds do the best they can and people had better take care of themselves.

Hurricanes and floods are much worse than earthquakes and effect much larger areas.

I think the last two weeks have demonstrated that in a way, even the ignorant can see.
I find it unbelievable that the folks of New Orleans couldn't take care of themselves for 5 minutes let alone 5 days. And then they blame Presidente Bush??? Even prior to Katrina, W had a lot on his plate w/o having to worry about the city of New Orleans on a daily basis.

My family had the same sentiment this week. We live in the mountains, but this was a wake up call. We are on our own for a while whether the disaster is anticipated (approaching storm) or not (earthquake)
We do not own a firearm, but we do have a supply of food and water.
How hard is it to navigate current laws in order to get a firearm?(Waiting period, registration, safety and firing lessons mandated by the state) or should we just 'ask around' on saturday at the local flea market?

My neighbors in Cal could hold off any medium sized police department or rioters for days. They get none of mine. I don't know about the rest of the country, but here, people have been jaded, as I have. Protect yourself and your own, or face the brutal, ugly consequences.
