Rabbi gives his take on Christian Exodus

DUDLEY BROWN, Staff Writer
Spartanburg Rabbi Yossi Liebowitz expects to be on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" tonight for a conversation about some of South Carolina's newest citizens.
He's a bit nervous.

Liebowitz will appear with a Baptist minister and a member of Christian Exodus on the 30-minute show, which is known for its satire and exaggeration.

"I've got fear and trepidation about it because it's high political humor," Liebowitz said.
The show, which airs at 11 p.m., will discuss Christian Exodus' members locating in the state.
Christian Exodus, based in Texas, is organizing the relocation of thousands of Christian conservatives to South Carolina to make an impact on electoral politics. According to its Web site, the group wants to reform local and state governments.

A statement on its site says, "Our mission is to glorify God through moral governance."
Ed Helms will host tonight's show. He interviewed Liebowitz outside of B'Nai Israel Temple this past week. Liebowitz said the show contacted him after finding the temple in the phonebook.
Liebowitz said Helms made him laugh during the taping by saying things like, "The Jewish rule of South Carolina is coming to an end."

"I was like, 'What are we ruling?' " asked Liebowitz, who said the state's Jewish population is well below 1 percent. He said the Jewish population in the United States is about 2 percent.

Liebowitz said he tried to strike a tolerant pose in the interview, even though he has some concerns about Christian Exodus. He said the group seems less tolerant of other religions than other Christian denominations. He, however, sees some positives, such as the passion its members have and their belief in God.

"It's part of the ongoing struggle of the American experience and deciding where is that boundary line between church and state," Liebowitz said.

I'm sure the Daily Show will give anything concerning Christians in America a fair, even-handed look.

(That line will probably be funnier than the show itself.)

It would appear as if this Rabbi might be "Reform".This is the branch of Judaism that, basically, doesn't believe in God.This, for example, puts them in pretty much the same league as the Unitarian/Universalists.

If he were an Orthodox Rabbi then we could count on worthwhile comments from him but I suspect that listening to him will be like listening to America's Favorite Trust Fund Maoist,Howie Dean.

I wouldn't argue with anything Liebowitz said in this article.

Christian Exodus is a group of people who want to do the right thing in their lives. The problem is that they do not seem very wise or knowledgable about government. They know some, and they are not wrong about everything, but they certainly are not studied enough to pull off what they are trying to pull off. And there's some good old fashioned human nature -- albeit with the best of intentions -- at the top that has a bent to abuse power. Right now it's only with words. But I wouldn't want to live under it. Of course, I might one day think it's a better alternative than the warped principles we still call America today.

""I wouldn't argue with anything Liebowitz said in this article.""

How about this:

Christian Exodus is not a "Christian denomination" but is instead a Christian organization made up of people from many different denominations, including Catholics, Mormons and many various protestant denominations.

So just what other Christian denominations are they less tolerant than? The Unitarian Universalists?

Oh... I thought this was about the current Christian exodus from the Holy Land.
