Homeland Security won't let Red Cross deliver food

Saturday, September 03, 2005 By Ann Rodgers, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

As the National Guard delivered food to the New Orleans convention center yesterday, American Red Cross officials said that federal emergency management authorities would not allow them to do the same.

Other relief agencies say the area is so damaged and dangerous that they doubted they could conduct mass feeding there now.

"The Homeland Security Department has requested and continues to request that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans," said Renita Hosler, spokeswoman for the Red Cross.

"Right now access is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities. We have been at the table every single day [asking for access]. We cannot get into New Orleans against their orders."

Calls to the Department of Homeland Security and its subagency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, were not returned yesterday.

It appears Ann Rogers mis-reported some important facts and the MSM ran with it. Rush is talking about this...here's the information in the best package I can manage. This is HUGH....

Hurricane Katrina: Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans? Access to New Orleans is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities and while we are in constant contact with them, we simply cannot enter New Orleans against their orders.

The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

I suspect that Ann Rogers knows she got it wrong (some call that lying) but it fit the agenda.

The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city suffering and the Democrats needed desparate people in front of the cameras so they can blame Bush.

They don't seem to know the difference between assumptions and wishful thinking.

Has anyone asked the Pittsburgh Gazette for a correction?

Yup...that's what the Red Cross website says! I don't think a lot of MSM reporters even know Louisiana has it's own Homeland Security Department.

I've heard her several times on TV explaining it was state officials connected to the state's homeland security that would not allow them in to NO.

What is the relationship of state Homeland Security officials to Federal Homeland Security...I have no idea.

The article says "Federal" but the Red Cross website says "State."

I haven't seen Ann Rogers on TV.

It was the LOUISIANA Dept. of Homeland Security, which is independent of the FEDERAL Dept. of Homeland Security that would not allow the RC in!

Heard that on the TV last night... whomever it was just said "Homeland Securty Deparment" the first time and when she repeated herself, interjected the word "State" the second time around. This is an issue with LOUISIANA HSD, not the Feds!

That's the point. That's why I posed the excerpt from the Red Cross website.
