This is my prediction.

Within a week, the debit card program will end up being exposed a poorly run government program that is fraught with scandal. The blame will be put on the Bush administration for the poor controls used. TV will show the grinning faces of recently moved NO looters (and non-NO looters) with their shopping baskets brimming. Many of these folks will have several cards in their possession.

I don't mean to be sarcastic, but the way this whole thing (rescue) has been spun so far, it's almost a sure bet.

You know, I could maybe see getting food stamps and perhaps vouchers for specific items, but $2,000 debit cards? Do we just have money to burn

who said those that did get these already would not get them? they have set up lines to address this in Astrodome.

The 2000.00 is on top of what they get from welfare. You have to add 1500.00 from Red Cross (debt cards) too.

See, there is a pot at the end of a rainbow.

This is just a thought...but are these cards just for the Folks in Astrodome..what about the folks who Hi tailed it out when they should have...I know its Cold to suggest this but aren't we "Rewarding" bad behavior...IE. I didn't leave when I should have...the Government will take care of me..

I'll probably be labeled a bad person..but Unregulated cash seems to indulging..and positively reinforcing non helpful behavior..

Re#31 Understood. Like welfare stamps. Bear in mind, however, that the vast majority of users are legit and not players...

These cards were given out by the Red Cross- amounts varied from 600 to 1500 IIRC, depending on the number of dependents.
People had to have pre registered to get cards and that caused a lot of confusion.
Volunteers were passing out water to those waiting, plus bottles full of juice to those with babies.
FEMA will be giving out separate 2K debit cards.

Yeah, it is really a shame. THey probably could have gone to the conventioncenter and told them via bull-horn, "whoever behaves themselves will get a $2000 debit card." and all the bad stuff would have never happened.

Most of the DUmmies think that it's NOT ENOUGH!!

Must be nice, thinking that any free money is still not enough taking into consideration all the donations and federal help most people will get!

Some of them are crying about how the 9/11 victims got millions, which I think they SHOULDN'T have gotten! Being a victim of a tragedy doesn't entitle you to become a millionaire!

bus passes. good thought. In Dallas they have been given passes that last for about 3 months. these passes should help them find jobs and housing.

I wonder if this will have the same stipulations attached to it as food stamps & other benefits, ie. no tobacco or alchohol can be purchased with it. It would be nice, but I don't expect anyone who works for the gummint to actually have a good idea. The no-tobacco-or-alchohol mandate never stopped any of the alchoholics and crackheads that I've met. They would trade an equal amount of benefits for cash (or a little less) and buy their goodies that way.

Why $2000 and not $250 or $500 no and more next week..

$2,000 is the most that any one family will receive. It is to enable them to buy gas, bus tickets, airplace tickets or to put a deposit down on an apartment or house to rent. They're not supposed to be able to spend that money and continue to stay in the shelters.

The evacuee population of the main 3 Houston shelters is reported to be down by 2/3's

That ebay auction says it's on the up and up, but I have a feeling it's on the downlow if you know what I'm saying.

I couldn't agree more, throwing money on a problem is ike throwing poop on a stink. It don't fix nothin'.

I really don't know ..

Are there people that abuse a good thing??

Yes, there are people like that every where

But there are also a lot of good folks who won't abuse the money given to them
