New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes
The New York Times ^ | Sept 8, 2005 | ALEX BERENSON and TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

Posted on 09/09/2005 10:47:37 AM PDT by Jack Black

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 8 - Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

But that order apparently does not apply to hundreds of security guards hired by businesses and some wealthy individuals to protect property. The guards, employees of private security companies like Blackwater, openly carry M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said that he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons.

Nearly two weeks after the floods began, New Orleans has turned into an armed camp, patrolled by thousands of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as National Guard troops and active-duty soldiers. While armed looters roamed unchecked last week, the city is now calm. No arrests were made on Wednesday night or this morning, and the police received only 10 calls for service, a police spokesman said.

And what about the financial loss? Firearms are not cheap. Whoever took them needs to either return them or financially compensate the owners. Then again, if 2nd amendment rights can be tramples, so can search and seizure rights. These people will likely never see their weapons or any compensation. It will be because of the state of emergency.

You can do that, but you will lose it when the city uses eminent domain to bulldozes your now blighted house so the developers can rebuild mcmansions you will never be able to afford.

This shows the total lack of perspective and sense in contemporary Government. If you ever had a time when the need for private arms was any clearer, than when there has been a breakdown in law and order, what could it be? But rather than focus on dealing with those out looting and shooting at rescue missions, they are going to confiscate everyone's weapons!

One more nail in the coffin of the free society, based upon a maximum of individual responsibility and a minimum of arbitrary authority, which was vouchsafed to us.

Of course, the idea that the City has a right to force people from their homes, against their will, also flies in the face of traditional American concepts of personal freedom and property rights. By what claimed right of anyone, are these actions justified? The right to inflict "good" on people, against their will, is not a right granted to Government in a free society.

...Wait for the BS laws to take effect in the next few months in all big cities based on what "could" happen to close any loop holes that NOLA socialists have tripped over......

Amazing how if anything was learned here it's that the citizen must be prepared to take care of himself. But now the government will now make a play to deprive the citizens of the means.

What is the purpose of having weapons if you are just going to bury them in the face of tyranny?

It's akin to putting a little extra money aside for emergencies.

And if you have too much money set aside, it can be confiscated as well.

"Purchase all to-be-cached weapons and ammunition with cash and make sure your name is in no way associated with the firearms"

Here Here! At least in Texas this is easy to do. I have
1 30-06
1 .357
1 .45
and many rounds of ammo in my cache.

No problem with that assortment at all. But you'd do well to include a 12-gauge shotgun as well. You may at some future time find it helpful to be able to equip another less well-prepared than yourself who could be helpful in all sorts of ways, ranging from surprising those who think they're dealing with you alone, or standing guard while you sleep...sometimes. And at other times can provide covering fire or backup for your sentry.

Besides, should anything critical in your rifle break or it otherwise falls hors de combat it'd be helpful to have a spare long gun upon which you could fall back to as a spare. Or two. Or three.

I believe a .22 conversion kit for the .45 might well be a useful accessory as well. Large quantities of .22 ammunition are both compact and relatively inexpensive, and the muzzle flash and sound signature is less overpowering at night.

So, now we do get to see the "nightmare scenario" that many RKBA advocates have feared for years. Police backed by Army doing house-by-house search and confiscation.

More damn looters....Just better equipped and in prettier clothes than the earlier ones.

"Larry Pratt is doing a radio interview right now with Alex Jones.

One of the thoughts he has conveyed is that a single individual can't resist this.

He is stressing organization."

I agree. One person will not be able to stand up to heavily armed troops alone. But instead of 'organization', I would substitute 'co-ordinated'. Organization implies a central locus. Organized operates more like the Internet.

If you had a little warning, you could grab a shovel and dig a hole in the backyard.

I don't think that would work. First of all, in this instance I'd think the water table would be too high to bury anything in the back yard. Next, you don't think they're not going to notice some freshly turned dirt? Maybe. Maybe not. IF they suspect the household is pro 2nd Amendment (Hint: NRA Member, gun mag subscriptions, or a CCW Permit not to mention multiple gun registrations Form 4473), that is beyond the normal definition of a "gun owner," they can tote along metal detectors and then it's over for anything in the area. Much better to have an off site cache someplace handy....preferably several caches.

In todays brave new world might makes right
If there is anything worth being dishonorably discharged for this may be it how can they obey those orders, the US Military acting as muscle for the local JBT's. So many say it will never happen, even as they see it happening right in front of them. I must confess I would chose life with my family rather than take a stand as most in LA will do, the ones that do make a stand will be killed and villified after the fact.

yeah they'll come in handy when the cops start looting again. Of course if they are carrying the gun it will cut down on the amount of bling they can carry off.

Totally correct. Not even for a little while. The only thing to be accomplished would be a replay of the Alamo, but shorter. Yeah, you could go out with an Honor Guard to escort you to the Pearly gates in style, but to what purpose? Those troops have families. They're Americans, too. This is not (yet) the War Between the States nor is it a second American Revolution. There may come a time for that, but not now. I'm guessing the situation then will be much more clear cut.

I don't think ML has ever been declared. I heard Honore' say -- 'we don't need that. We have it under control.' Also, on Brit Hume I think, that ML means ALL civil rights suspended, perhaps by the Prez. I think there would have been an uproar to raise the roof if that had happened.
