Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 12:39 a.m. EDT Ray Nagin: Flooded School Buses Not My Fault

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said Friday that it wasn't his fault city school buses weren't mobilized to facilitate the Hurricane Katrina evacuation he ordered.

Appearing on NBC's "Dateline," Nagin was asked by host Stone Phillips: "What was mobilized? I mean were national guard troops in position. Were helicopters standing by? Were buses ready to take people away?"

"No. None of that," the Big Easy mayor replied. "Why is that?" an incredulous Phillips asked.

Nagin replied: "I dont know. That is question for somebody else."

The Louisiana Democrat didn't explain just who the "somebody else" was, saying only:

"All I can do is [say] that I was dealing with it as a mayor -- how do I prepare my city for an incredibly powerful storm? So immediately we tried to get as many people out as possible."

The "Dateline" exchange was only the second time Mayor Nagin had been asked about the failure to use his city's school buses, hundreds of which sat 1.2 miles from the Superdome.

Two days after the levees broke, Nagin told a New Orleans radio station that he wanted Greyhound Bus Lines to send their entire fleet rather than launch an evacuation in public school buses.

"One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here," Nagin said.

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

Such breathless stupidity that I am finding a hard time equating it with anything other that "Able Danger" and all of the chances we lost to deal with Mr. Bin Laden. I still believe that we are seeing some of the fruits of Affirmative Action in the leadership of New Orleans and Louisiana.

Bull! Crisis management/Disaster preparedness, is
part and parcel of *Every* mayors duties in *every*
city, in the WORLD.

It is the incumbent duty for every public official
to be prepared to fullfil their crisis duties
in an emergency, or know where they are supposed
to go, to be out of the way, but still "reachable"
to perform the duties of their office, including
*running* an 'emegency situation' "mobile/temporary
office".

If FEMA failed in it's duties in significant ways in
regards to New Orleans..It's because the Mayor, and the
LA Governer, had not done *their* jobs, in performancer
of their local and state duties. Like the ACLU wants
of all america, New Orleans 'Wasn't Prepared'...to do
jack..and so..they failed mserably.

I swear..it should be a requirement of every public official and Governmental dfepartment head, Federa state and local, to take and *pass* educational courses in 'Good Governance'.

I figured he was democratic, wasn't positive though...

Now watch, if we start correctly pinning both of them as inept, the democrats will cry politics (especially Pelosi)! Oh, it's the republicans picking on democrats. Ha!

The mayor or governor could easily have called for volunteer bus drivers in radio and TV announcements. The buses need only have been driven seventy-nine miles to waiting shelters in Baton Rouge. They could have been shuttled back and forth 24 hours a day and easily have taken tens of thousands to safety.

What was missing was common sense and presence of mind of leadership in a time of crisis. The mayor and governor were demonstrably too emotional to lead an evacuation. We saw video of a crying governor and a cussing mayor, both wringing their hands and demanding somebody (else) do something.

Time and time again throughout history, those who remained calm in a crisis are the ones who have saved lives and provided leadership.

I'm waiting for Nagin to say:

"Well, we couldn't use the buses to evacuate people because they weren't schoolchildren."

He isn't/won't. The MSM is still sniffing around looking for a way to tie this all to Bush. When it finally realize that it can't, it will turn on Nagin and Blanco and rip them to pieces.

Incompetence, thy name is Nagin.

The school buses are good enough for their kids to ride to school in, but apparently not good enough to save your life in.

Great Googly Moogly! I can't believe this man is getting away with this.

Have you forgotten that this happened in Louisianna, home to the drive through daiquiri shops, Jimmy Swaggart and Huey Long?

As long as Blanco and Nagin have the MSM focusing their spotlight on GWB they will skate scot free.

Yes...we can add "bus driver" to Bush's job qualifications along with "running employment office on White House lawn" and "King of oil barrel pricing for American consumers".

Apparently, Nagin never heard of delegating. I'm still wondering where the thousands of DNC bus drivers hiding.

LOL
