Disaster Can’t Destroy Gun Rights

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre slammed New Orleans authorities Monday for seizing legal firearms from lawful residents.

"What we’ve seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was intended to allow citizens to protect themselves, " LaPierre said.

"When law enforcement isn’t available, Americans turn to the one right that protects all the others - the right to keep and bear arms," LaPierre said. "This attempt to repeal the Second Amendment should be condemned."

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

A Louisiana state statute allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies. "But regulate doesn’t mean confiscate," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families," Cox said.

"The NRA will not stand idly by while guns are confiscated from law-abiding people who’re trying to defend themselves," he said.

"We’re exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we’re taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist."

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature’s assault on human life into man’s assault on human rights," LaPierre said. "Four million NRA members intend to stop this unconstitutional power grab."

Similarly after 9/11 everyone wore NYPD shirts with pride. NOBODY wants a NO PD t-shirt.

He got all bent out of shape because I was on a thread about dogs being shot in St. Bernard Parish by the redneck BTK sherrif and said that the NOPD was in real trouble now. As long as they stuck to seizing guns and kicking old ladies @$$e$ everything was OK but they crossed a line with the post 2000 freepers when they started shooting dogs! It must have struck a nerve because it blew the thread up!

And notice when I was talking about the post 2000 freepers I said "as a general rule"! The rule must have applied judging from the reaction.

Oh no doubt. Some FReepers prefer dogs to people. That pit bull that mauled the children to death only did that because he was mistreated.

Of course, that doesn't hold up when they attack their benevolent owners and chew their ass up.

I love dogs and was sickened when I saw the BTK sherrif in his wife beater T-shirt getting his rocks off shooting people's pets. It disgusted me - but the real problem was the mandatory evac. The only people who are going to take care of the pets are the owners and they were having thier Rights trashed.

I have no problems with dogs either. We have a nice faithful mutt. He barks when he should, and he hasn't bit anybody. He never has had a reason to, and he's just generally well tempered.

Dogs left unattended though will likely form packs. The meanest one in the bunch is who the rest will follow.

Many years back a neighbor of mine had a dog that just kind of went nuts for some reason. It threatened his mother. This dog had in previous weeks suddenly killed every cat they had. He couldn't do it himself, and asked me if I would shoot it. This same dog who had never given me any problem for years had by the way about two weeks before the incident with his mom acted like he was going to chew me up.

So, I didn't have a problem with getting rid of that POS.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I like dogs, but I expect them to behave. They are good animals, but still animals. If left to their own devices without assistance, they can become a danger.

Did you ever read White Fang by Jack London? Socialist that he was, he could really get inside of an animals skin. I still get chills recalling the chapter "The Clinging Death".

I really feel that this disaster gave the feds the opportunity to test their power against lawful gun-owners.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST! Be prepared for gun confiscation coming to a town near you. Disasters could be a blizzard, tornados, blackouts, gas shortages etc, whatever FEMA and the Feds want it to be.

I'd rate it as being one ratchet-notch higher (on the scale of incremental loss of liberty) than a "test'.

I consider it to be an "exercise", and I don't think it's likely to be the only exercise of that sort.

Several years ago, there was something making the rounds that was at first dismissed as an urban legend, but then it was revealed to be an actual incident.

I'm referring to the 29 Palms "Combat Arms Survey".

It looks like that survey (and probably a lot of stuff that DIDN'T leak out) is coming to fruition.

The problem is that the wishy-washy hand-wringing left has redefined the term "mercenary" to mean "hired killer."

Mercenaries have only been considered across-the-board bad in recent times. Of course, American history has a lot of bad things to say about the Hessians in the Revolutionary War, but 18th century conflict typically had mercenaries on both sides. Indeed, issuing a letter of marque (which our Constitution explicity allows for) is issued to a person for the purpose of fighting an enemy in exchange for allowing the person to profit from it.

Until recent times, there were only two kinds of militaries. Impressed troops and volunteer troops. Paid, professional troops, like the ones that we have serving right now, and also including police forces, would have been considered mercenaries.

Just another one of those words and phrases that the left has hijacked.

no, there will be some shops that will sell a whole bunch of NOPD shirts..probably that say something like "support looting, support NOPD" pic of cops with shopping carts and TVs on back. or maybe "don't loot, NOPD hates competition" or maybe, "NOPD: in case of emergency, break glass" with a picture of plane tickets to vegas in a glass case.

and of course there's the one on cafepress that's being sold..
