The Dem playbook

The Hill newspaper gives us a peek at the Democratic playbook for the Roberts hearings. Below are the attack assignments for the Democratic members of the Committee:

Kennedy -- civil rights

Leahy -- Bybee torture memo

Biden -- privacy, personal autonomyand the 9th Amendment

Kohl -- Property rights and civil liberties

Feinstein -- "judicial activism" and Roe vs. Wade

Feingold -- limits of executive powers

Schumer and Durbin have wisely refused to show their hand.

I think the biggest surprise thus far is Specter actually in there with a pair.

Spector made a deal with Bush to get his support for reelection. What Spector has wanted his entire political career was to be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He wanted that position so he could exercise power. He gets to exercise real power when a Republican appoints a Supreme Court Justice. He did not want the job so he could get the reputation of a wimp but as a man who took on the Kennedys and Schumers and won.

To understand Spector you have to understand why men crave fame and power. Spector takes positions that reflect the views of the people of Pennsylvania... That is he is a true blue RINO. But he loves power and fame. Going belly up to Kennedy and Schumer would only prove him to be subserviant to Democratic power, and an ingrate to his party.

'Turbin stated the memo is in Roberts' handwriting.' From 1982. !

Did anyone else pick up that when Spector asked Durban what number was on the document he said there wasn't any.

Don't all documents have identification numbers. Sounds to me like Durban is tossing in a ringer. Wonder where he got that document????

BUT, I was certainly surprised, shocked even, by Schumer's rather mild performance.

Schumer understands TV and what people watching will think. Schumer knows he is not smart enough to take on Roberts and win. Schumer knows if he plays attack dog on national TV with lots of people watching, he will just damage his own reputation.

Schumer knows that every time the camera goes on Roberts the viewers think nice and very brilliant man. Schumer knows that everytime the camera goes on Kennedy or Bidden the viewers think obnxious a$$es.

Schumer has national ambitions. Biden does too. But Biden is very dumb and Schumer is not that dumb. Schumer knows that if he goes after Roberts, Roberts will tattoo the phrase "Obnoxious A$$" on Schumers forehead as well.

Schumer does not want to give Roberts a chance to do to him what Roberts is doing to Kennedy and Bidden.

It is the first rule of politics..

Never get in a fight with someone who can kick your rump with out raising a sweat.

Crissy's claim to fame

You are right. I watched him when he was telling the truth about Clinton... But stopped soon after he made a sharp left turn.

Crissy is not too bright. TV and Radio are ratings businesses. When I was an air personality if the ratings were good, I could tell the program director and station manager to kiss my rump and they would both make smacking noises with his lips. If the ratings were lousy, I could willingly do every thing the bosses said, and still end up fired.

I have no doubt that Chrissy bowed to his bosses at the cost of losing his audience. That is the act of a an air personality that does not know how to play the game.

ah, but he CLAIMED he didn't want to surprise Judge Roberts, he would MENTION and WAVE the document, claim it had some 'scurrilous' information, but claim that he would wait til the Judge saw it....

OXEN, reverse PING to Day 2 Transcript. Unfortunately it doesn't have a Printer Friendly version when you get there (I think it's 156 pages, maybe that's why.)

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/files/specials/interactives/roberts_transcripts/index.html?SITE=MOSPL

If that link doesn't work, go to http://www.news-leader.com. It's the same link you gave me yesterday. It should say Transcripts of John Roberts hearing, somewhere on the page.

As he ends his round, I think you now have idea why I wanted to wait before writing off Schumer as an attack dog.  Appears he was just lying in wait . . .

Yesterday, he was apparently probing for soft spots.  Today, he launched the attack.  There was a time or two where I thought he had Roberts' in a tight corner.
