Poll: Rebuilding New Orleans High Priority
AP ^ | 9/14/05

Americans say rebuilding New Orleans is more important to them than cutting taxes or changing Social Security, a poll found. Cutting taxes and changing Social Security were both priorities of the Bush administration before the storm. Almost two-thirds, 63 percent, said rebuilding the city devastated by Hurricane Katrina is more important to them than changing Social Security, and almost three-fourths, 73 percent, said rebuilding the flooded city is more important to them than cutting taxes, according to a CBS-New York Times poll released Wednesday.

A large majority of Americans, 73 percent, said they think their taxes will increase as a result of Katrina. More than half of those polled said they were willing to pay more taxes to help with Katrina recovery, job training and housing for victims. Three-fourths said they are not willing to pay more for gasoline to help with the recovery, however.

The poll found whites and blacks have sharply different views of government efforts to help victims recover from the hurricane. While six in 10 whites say the government is doing all it can to help with the recovery, only a third of blacks felt that way. Seven in 10 blacks polled said they have little or no confidence that the Bush administration will help hurricane victims find housing and jobs.

Two-thirds of all those polled said they doubt the Bush administration has a clear plan to find homes and jobs for victims.

I frankly don't care if New Orleans NEVER gets rebuilt.

All that matters is the port and the refineries.

Not only that -- if we pay to rebuild residential neighborhoods below sea level again, then the American taxpayers really are getting shafted.

This is grotesquely manipulated BS, but it's all part of the full court press by the media and the liberals to roll back the tax cuts, pour hundreds of billions of dollars in free taxpayer money into the pockets of the grafters in Louisiana, and bring on a recession. This is the way they think they can win in '06 and '08. Knowing what they're doing doesn't make it any less galling, however.

NO will be rebuilt, like it or not.

I think that it will be rebuilt relatively quickly, and better than it was before.

We should take pride in it when it is.

I don't want my SS going to New Orleans. I want it to help pay for my new boat, harbored on Yellowstone lake in the summer.

hmmm, somehow this does not add up.
willing to pay more taxes
not willing to pay more for gas
both for same reason.
sorry I am not willing to pay more taxes so they can rebuild it and then in a few years have it get hit again and start all over again,
and as for jobs and education, we have been throwing money at this problem for how long now? and has there been any improvement?

"Americans say rebuilding New Orleans is more important to them than cutting taxes or changing Social Security, a poll found .....".

They've gone too far with their poll manipulation, now. The vast majority of people who hear this will know that those percentages are out of line ... The vast majority of Americans want both the Social Security reforms and permanent tax cuts. People are really not as dumb as the MSM think they are.

Well they sure didn't ask my opinion. I say only rebuild if New Orleans pays for it. Let them get jobs and do it themselves if it's so precious.I sure as hell don't want to foot the bill for a lost cause with hard working Americans tax dollars.

Didn't they learn ANYTHING? I say build a bunch of schools and educate them on what the words FLOOD, HURRICANE and EVACUATE mean.

LOL...I'm sure it's VERY importantant to SeeBS and the other Dems who see members of their plantation scattered over 8 states. They need to build new ghettos where the buses can once again roll on election day to stuff the boxes for Mary Landreau and other members of the white elite who rule LA. Wonder how many hundreds of years it will take before blacks finally ask why no black Dem politician has ever been governor or senator from LA.

"as for jobs and education, we have been throwing money at this problem for how long now?"

Getting jobs for people is NOT the government's responsibility.

As to the education.. they have been spending what $4000++++ per child for how many years????????

But I bet you the blacks who do something about their situation will recover a heck of a lot faster than the blacks who sit around moaning their condition.

I think it SUCKS that my tax money is going to rebuild this place. it's not as if there are not any other safe available places to build in the US.
If people want to live on a floodplain, fine, let em.
if they want to live on the San Andreas fault, let them.
You want a mansion in Tornado alley? great do it.

but when the big bad wolf blows your house down, don't expect THIS little piggie to foot the bill.
