Severin set to break out of Boston
Boston Globe ^ | September 16, 2005 | Geoff Edgers

Posted on 09/16/2005 4:37:01 PM PDT by ConservativeStatement

He's called Bill Clinton ''a traitor" and Al Gore ''Al Whore," but until now, Jay Severin's radio audience has been largely limited to Boston. That will change in January. Today Infinity Broadcasting will announce that it has signed the sharp-tongued former political consultant to do a radio show in a series of syndicated markets beginning next year.

Jay lost me when he said "You go girl" in support of Cindy Sheehan. I heard Hannity (whose show was aired in place of Jay's as it generally is in Severin's absence) mention Jay on his show today, too.

Jay is a fraud who has embellished his resume....

He looks like a rabid right winger in Boston but that doesn't take much

I stopped listening to Jay back during the 2004 election cycle.

His incessant negativism about Bush losing really got on my nerves, as did his harping about his 20 years of professional political consulting experience which gave him great insight into the probable outcome.

Then his constant ragging on Bush for the war in Iraq. He's mad because he thinks we just should have nuked Iraq rather than lose one soldier, and that at least we should have left after Saddam was deposed.

Too bad, because he is extraordinarily articulate, and can be quite witty. He would be a joy to listen to if he weren't such a pill.

Jay's favorite color is brown. That's probably because his head is so far up his butt, that's the only color around. But I guess the Infinity Broadcasting people have money to throw away.

Believe it or not, the day after the 2004 election, Severin went into a joyous monologue, pretending that he was on the Bush bandwagon all along. It was as if the previous 6 months of negativity (regarding a certain Bush defeat) never happened.

I haven't listened much to Severin lately nor radio in general. These days, its all satellite radio and podcasts.

In fact, if anybody out there subscribes to Adam Curry's "Daily Source Code,", Adam sounds an awful lot like Jay Severin. That is, with respect to voice and speaking style, not politics.

He also changed his name from Jimmy Severino to Jay Severin. He was still Jimmy when I knew him at Vassar in the 1970's. I wonder if he would own up to that now. He was not a preppy, ( he was just a townie from Poughkeepsie, NY) but always pretended he was. He was obsessed with preppies and if you weren't, he didn't want anything to do with you.

No Jay Severin for me, thanks just the same. Jay's annoying, a martini bar kind of guy.

Howie Carr knows Boston's politicians and hoodlums (often one and the same). He actually broadcasts from Boston, unlike Jay. Howie is a regular guy, no pretensions. And very funny.

Me too! I had only started listening to him in June of 2004 but between the Bush-bashing and the Iraq War bashing, I couldn't stand listening to him anymore...

That's easy when they consider Mike Barnicle, the plagiarist, a moderate.

I'm willing to bet Jay won't play in the heartland.

Less flattering article on Severin, also in today's Boston Globe here: Severins Phony Pulitzer.
I don't listen to him anymore. He pretends to be broadcasting from Boston but actually broadcasts from a Long Island Studio. He claims to be this huge Libertine Ladies man, who solicits unattached nymphomaniacs to attend the live broadcasts (usually in Boston area bar rooms) that he comes up from Long Island to do every 6 to 8 weeks. Yet he is said to be happily married with children. He apparently changed his name. He has Cindy Sheehan on his show and fawns over her. What else is he making up?

I couldn't stand listening to him anymore...

He comes across as an arrogant twit who gets all superior-acting, nasty, and sarcastic when people disagree with him.

Also, that "thank you" bit to those who serve(d) in the armed forces comes across as self-centered, like they're doing it for him.

He lost me when Jeannie Garafaolo (?) lost her show for vociferous disagreement with partial birth abortion, and his statements were that it's his job to do his thing and not to stick his neck out for others.

He used to be synidcated and I heard him on a Portland station, and later I think he was on WOR in NY and I'd pick up the AM signal...I think that this was the mid-90s. I liked him...and I wrote last year to a local station to take a liberal (Lionel) off and replace him with Jay, I wanted to hear Jay's commentary during the election season.

I'm also a Howie fan and I heard the snide comments about Jay today but didn't realize until reading a post to today's Howie Carr thread that it was about Jay. It's pretty funny.

Superior-acting and nasty is absolutely right. Severin, in his effort to whore himself to a national market, tried come across as an independent thinker who wasn't afraid to trash the President. But when it turned out he wasn't the next David Brudnoy, he stuck to what he does best...sarcastically trashing anyone who disagrees with him.

Adios.

Severin used to fill in for Bob Grant (WABC and WOR), on occasion. I always thought he was pretty good. Then I have no idea what happened to him. Suddenly he became this rabid leftwing nutball. Bob Grant had some very harsh things to say about him and Severin was no longer a substitute host for Bob Grant.

I listen to Howie, too, except for when he has dopey recurring topics like "Disgusting things you found in your food at a restaurant." He is at his best when talking about local political stuff, no doubt, and he has a certain self-depricating ("I didn't come here to be made sport of" and "I beg your pardon" when people critique him) charm that is sincere and whimsical. The weekly segments with Sandy (police blotter) and Chris Wallace are generally stellar.

A couple of years ago, the Globe ran some critical stories about him, including that he did not live in Massachusetts and that he was happily married with children. He (on the air) took great issue with some things in the Globe stories but did not mention anything about how they were wrong about where he lived or his marital status.
I rarely listem to him anymore. He is supposed to be hosting a "talk show", but often you can tune in to the beginning of his show and he will bloviate and take no calls for 15 to 20 minutes, until he is forced to go to a station ID break/time check, or a commercial break. I really do not want to hear almost anyone go on and on for 20 minutes straight. He also seems to consider himself all knowing when it comes to 70s era hard rock and roll (and what music is cool and what is not), and lets his bumpers go on for way too long at times.

This page 6 excerpt from 7/17 may be what you were referring to:
JAY Severin has vanished from MSNBC's new "The Situation with Tucker Carlson." Sources say Severin, a conservative who hosts a radio talk show in Boston, didn't enjoy the commute from his home in Sag Harbor to the TV show's studio in New Jersey - especially when he saw how low Carlson's ratings were. Severin, who has a wife and young daughter, was also promised a state-of-the-art studio where he could do his radio show on the days when he was on TV, but MSNBC didn't deliver. Severin's departure leaves humorless Air America host Rachel Maddow as the breakout star on Carlson's daily panel.

Yes, that is the NY Post piece.

It seems that Scot Lehigh and Jay Severin have a history between them. Oftentimes, if I am listening to the radio midday, I will switch between Howie and Jay. I recall a few seismic verbal shots Jay lobbed towards him on a few occasions.

Jay's unique anti-Hillary observations are entertaining.

Jay is absolutely terrific when someone can steer the conversation to Hillary. He calls he every kind of sick puke you can think of...on the air!!!!

His shows in the past year have shown a lot of opportunism, tho - I would actually tune into IMUS on MSNBC early on the mornings when he was to appear - and he would sound like a Kerry/Imus suck up to the extreme. I was disappointed, to say the least.

Howie is da bomb.

Former Bostonian here. I listened to Jay sometimes, but he was a creep, which fit the depravity of some Bostonians. During one broadcast, Jay shared a stage with Laura Ingraham. He kept complimenting her on her looks. I sensed that Laura was put off by it. How? She normally is quick to reply during broadcasts, but she wasn't whenever Jay talked about her appearance. Instead, she was silent. I felt uneasy for Laura about it.

After that broacast, I mainly tuned into Jay's competitor, that candy-a$$ed ruffian named Howie Carr.

How are you doing ? I met a couple of 25 year old Vassar grds on the Metro North train coming back from Poughkeepsie a few weeks ag. They were praising Fran Fergusson for her anti-war statements. They looked downright puzzled when I said that her stance had alienated some grads."When you're older, you might feel differently" I said. No doubt they were snickering about what I said later on.

There was this chatter in today's Boston Herald gossip column:

Yakker’s empty words

WTKK's Jay Severin was caught embellishing his resume yet again. Severin, who claimed – falsely – to have won a Pulitzer Prize and who allowed himself to be introduced – falsely – as a graduate of Harvard Law School also claimed – falsely – to have a master's degree from Boston University.

Barry Nolan, CN8's roving reporter, said he brought the latest Severin subterfuge to the attention of Jay's agent, George Tobia, who told him that Jay ''skipped the graduation ceremony but remembers getting his diploma in the mail.''

Oh, that's rich!

''Then he told me that I was right, Jay had no master's. He said Jay had never turned in his thesis, even though he thought he had,'' Nolan told the Track. ''I told him that I found that rather hard to believe because everyone knows that the minute you hand in that thesis you do a Funky Chicken down Commonwealth Avenue, run to the bar and buy everyone a round of margaritas!''

Severin just inked a deal with Infinity Broadcasting to be syndicated in 10 markets beginning in January. A press release announcing the deal on Infinity's Web site originally reported the non-existent master's degree from BU. An updated version reports only that Jay is a graduate of Vassar College.

Vassar once only educated women. But as far as we know, Jay has never claimed to be one of those.

I started listening to Jay after the 2000 election. I stopped when he started the bullcrap about Bush and the Iraq war.

I never liked his 'best and brightest' line, and told him so when he was in our town for a live broadcast. It was patronizing and disingenuous. He's a tiny man with a Napoleon complex.

I am thankful that the station now carries Sean Hannity instead of Jay. I switch back and forth between Hannity and Howie, who is comic relief.
