There is a potential problem brewing in the midst of the hurricane's aftermath--- both Louisiana State Police and the Red Cross are trying to get a handle on it, but nobody seems to have the right answer. It involves thousand of New Orleans sex offenders forced out of their city into our shelters and neighborhoods in Baton Rouge.
From the beginning we've heard stories of rape, even child rape in the aftermath of the hurricane. By law Louisiana sex offenders are supposed to register where they live. This is meant to keep us all safe, just so we know who our neighbors are. But now, we have found sex offenders living in Red Cross shelters, and on our streets, right next to families, right next to children.
When New Orleans cleared out, Baton Rouge and other areas took people in; we got the good with the bad. People with convictions for forcible rape, molestation, crimes against nature are now unaccounted for at this time. State police now has thousands and thousands of registered sex offenders out there somewhere, a good majority of them are believed to be in shelters.
WAFB Streetbeat team's research found a number of sex offenders located in the Baton Rouge area, specifically a man convicted of forcible rape, living in a shelter packed with families and children. When you look at the New Orleans registered sex offenders a good number of them are women. Red Cross officials say they have been working behind the scenes on this problem, but Red Cross says they have to be accepting of everyone, sex offender or not.
Now with so many children running lose at the shelters, WAFB's Greg Meriwether asked Red Cross officials what specific measures are in place to keep children and families away from potential offenders? The answer is a little troubling. There's not much they can do, because to be honest-- nobody knows who all of these sex offenders are just yet.
Red Cross says they are depending on the security already in place at the shelters to combat any problems. Of course the best thing you can do as a parent-- watch your children closely--- as we all know, criminals use opportunities like these to take of advantage of those who are down.
By they way you can check our links mentioned section to search the state police sex offender list.

Hey, why don't they ask Nagin and Blankojerko how they should solve this problem?
"specifically a man convicted of forcible rape"
Is there any other kind?
When you look at the New Orleans registered sex offenders a good number of them are women.
Bizarre!
this is not a hard problem to deal with,,,,they should broadcast and get the news out to any displaced sex offenders to go to local authorities within 3 days and tell of their whereabouts---the ones who don't respond should have their picture and names posted all over the news and internet and sent to every shelter/motel possible,,,,,,how hard is that??
Streetbeat? Isn't that what got these guys in prison in the first place?
Well, there is statutory rape, of the "she told me she was 18" variety.
But a sex offender is 'heading' the private relief efforts with ex-Pres. Bush.

I think if you are a prostitute you are considered a sex offender. NO had a lot of prostitutes. Male and female.
There is also the kind where the girl actively pursues an older man and seduces them.
Then there is the kind where it is legal until one of a girlfriend/boy friend pair turns 18 and then that person becomes a statory rapist.
Makes no difference. The law treats them all the same.
Oh, thanks for clarifying it! I was thinking along the lines of Mary Kay Letourneau!
Statutory rape?
Born women or converted?
Born women or converted?
Eww! I didn't even think of that angle....
I just browsed the list and found several women convicted of child pornography.
