2006 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominations Leave Out Many Rock Acts Again

By: Douglas Maher - All Headline News Staff Reporter

September 18,2005 9:41 A.M. EST

Cleveland,Ohio (AHN) - The nominees for the Class of 2006 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is filled with a lot of hold overs from previous years and virtually ignores a truckload of artists that many critics are shaking their heads over.

J.Geils Band, John Mellencamp, the Patti Smith Group, Chic, Joe Tex,Miles Davis, Cat Stevens, Blondie, the Paul Butterfield Band, the Dave Clark Five and the Sir Douglas Quintet will all have a chance to make it into the hall of fame located in Cleveland.

This year also marks the eighth chance for Black Sabbath, Lynyd Skynyrd gets their seventh chance, and the Sex Pistols and the Stooges all of which are on try number five.

Missing from the nomination list again this year include bands like Rush, Van Halen, Yes, Genesis, ELO, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Heart, Deep Purple, Pat Benatar, and Duran Duran.

Nominees are picked by a 70-member committee of rock 'n' roll historians, journalists and label execs, with ballots then mailed to an international voting body of 700 music industry types for the final decision. The five to seven nominees that receive the most votes will be inducted into the Rock Hall next year.

JGeils Band nominated?I agree that some really good bands appear to be overlooked here.BTW,the lead singer for JG(Peter Wolf?)was a former DJ turned performer.Maybe that could have influenced voters? If u are so inclined, give a listen to JGB,"Ladies Invited"."Slippin and slidin all over the floor, tryin to make it to my babies door...."They may not be legends, but back in the day...

Saw them live at the Boathouse in Hampton. In 1969.

Must be nice. Didn't get to see Blackmore live until he was fronting 'Rainbow' with Graham Bonnet singing lead. (Missed Dio...damn.) Opening act? Ronnie Montrose's 'Gamma'...NOT one of the occasions where the opening act sucks...Montrose is vastly under-rated. Later on; had the privilege of seeing the reformed 'Deep Purple' on several occasions in the mid 80's...great, great concerts.

I really think that most of those that really deserve, but aren't in the RRHOF feel the same. I think the fans are more upset that the bands

But I imagine you're right. I would think that Ritchie has a special contempt for the "posers" that are running the RRHOF. His arrogance is part of his charm :)

Oh well, that's enough a rant.

Indeed. You can bronze that one and stick it on a wall. I agree. Too bad we won't read anything like that in Rolling Stone.

Ever wonder what ... Paul Simon,

Sorry, Hawk, I have to disagree with you on that. There are few singer/songwriter's more deserving of membership then Paul Simon.

His list of hit song's is extensive and his variations in musical ability is admirable. "Graceland" alone puts him in a category unmatched by many who have been mentioned in this thread.

How about the late great Warren Zevon?
My tag line is a quote from him. He was good friends with David Lettermen. Letterman devoted a whole show to Warren just before he died. Letterman asked Warren that since he knew he only had a little time left on this planet, what he might want to share with the people watching. Warren thought for a moment and then said, "Enjoy Every Sandwich." That was all he said, no explanation and Lettermen never asked for one.
I thought this line summed up what life should be all about. I will never forget Warren or this little wisdom of his. We take FAR TOO MUCH for granted. Thanks Warren.

remnant farmland in metro nashville is taxed at agro-rate

which is a pittance compared to commerical

do you have a link where suburban agro-land is taxed at commercial rates

what does hurt farmers is over supply of what they grow, rising chemicals, fuel and machinery rates and punitive death taxes...due to return in 2011 I believe.

...and cheap competition from abroad

I've seen the New Purple twice with Steve Morse. He brings a different style to the band, but most importantly the band is happy and playing as a unit again.

Ritchie making very decent acoustic/electric mix Medieval music now, seems happy with it

Politically and socially, Cleveland is not the Midwest. It's Pittsburgh on the lake.

Miles Davis is R&R?

Sir Douglas Quintet? Doug Sahm and the band are from San Antonio. I knew Doug Sahm and the band as they came up and liked them. But Doug Sahm is no R&R Hall of Famer compared to many of the bands and artists still to be included.

There are a lot of minor bands like this and Blondie and Pat Benatar that are named in the article who don't have a chance.
