Schumer is also a member of the Judiciary Committee.

A short statement that shows a HUGE PROBLEM in the Congress...

Basically, if too many vote against Roberts, then whatever they do on the next one will look partisan (because it will be, but they don't want it to *look* that way).

If they vote for him because he'll pass anyway, that will give them (in their own minds) a little more lattitude.

"Never once have Democrats benefited from attempts at reasonableness and compromise and accommodation," said Jim Jordan, former executive director of the party's senatorial committee. "To the contrary, Bush and his team seem to view political compromise as weakness, and they punish it rather than reward or reciprocate it."

This is remarkable. It clearly explains the motivation for Democrat's unwillingness to be reasonable, to compromise and to be accomodating.

It is manifestly obvious and easily documentable, however, that President Bush has been accomodating, reasonable and willing to compromise with the Senate Democrats.

What are we to make of this?

A possible explanation is that influential leaders of the Democrat party are insane. Paranoid, perhaps?

A likely interpretation is that Bush is conservative. Liberals expect that compromise, accomodation and reason equate with liberal sentiments. His persistent conservatism marks Bush as uncompromising, unaccomodating and unreasonable.

There you have it, fellow Freepers. Until conservatives give up their delusions and accept a liberal world view they will never be acceptable to the ideologues who control the Democrat party.

Straight out of Stalin's playbook. It's the big lie. It's comical. If you listen to the democrats, your view will always be correct if you think the exact opposite.

I voted for McGovern and Carter the first time he ran. I left the democratic party when I started to have to lie to defend my positions.

These people are nothing but lying communists.

The dimocrats are smarter than their special interest groups. They know that if they go party-line (or anything close to it) against a guy as clearly, completely, and competently qualified as Roberts, that the'll never be listened to again. Bush will be able to appoint any judge, including one that's as far right-wing as the moonbats claim Roberts to be, and nobody will listen to them when they object.

"Never once have Democrats benefited from attempts at reasonableness and compromise and accommodation," said Jim Jordan, former executive director of the party's senatorial committee.

Oh come on, Jimmy; get real. I can't think of even ONE "attempt at reasonableness and compromise and accommodation" from these bozo dems.

Gee, what about voting for or against the candidate based on ability to fullfil the job.

Democrats make a Wellstone Memorial over every issue no matter how big or how small.

Dems truly live in a parrallel universe where black is white and white is black. Maybe that is because the MSM is always on their side and always against Conservatives. That may help explain their skewed perceptions of reality. That, and their mistaken underlying assumptions about man's nature and the way the world works.

The abortion Nazis, the race hustlers and poverty pimps and the envirofascists aren't going to let the "Democrats" off easy on this one.

I expect they'll make long speeches to try to create the impression that Roberts is really Adolf Hitler.

I think you summed it up pretty well there...

I don't think there will be much effect of the "... pressures ..."

I'll be surprised if even a single D on the Judiciary Committee votes for Roberts.

Whatever Democrats decide, Roberts' confirmation to succeed the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist is all but secured, given widespread, possibly unanimous support among the Senate's 55 Republicans. -DAVID ESPO, Associated Press Writer

This sentence struck me as strange. Is that the reason confirmation is secured, not because his qualifications are outstanding? Not because a naked party-line vote against him would be a travesty?
