Al-Zawahiri criticises Afghan elections
Aljazeera ^ | Tuesday 20 September 2005, 3:06 Makka Time, 0:06 GMT

Al-Qaida number two Ayman al-Zawahiri has dismissed the legitimacy of Afghanistan's parliamentary elections in a new tape broadcast by Aljazeera.

In the tape, Al-Zawahiri played down US accomplishments in Afghanistan, saying it had just managed to move Taliban's government from Kabul to the mountains and countryside.

The tape aired by Aljazeera was produced by al-Sahab Productions which usually distributes al-Qaida's videos.

The taped interview of al-Zawahiri had appparently been conducted to commemorate the fourth anniversary of September 11 attacks on Washington and New York.

"What did they do, they drove Taliban's government out of Kabul, but it has been active in the mountains and countryside, where the real power of Afghanistan lies, " al-Zawahiri said.

The Al-Qaida deputy chief dismissed the legitimacy of the just-concluded Afghan parliamentary elections.

"The elections have been conducted under the terror of [Afghanistan's] warlords," al-Zawahiri said.

He added that northern Afghanistan and Kabul had become "an area of chaos, plundering, theft, violations and drug business" under American occupation.

"The elections were a masquerade more than anything else, as various regions of the country are under the control of highwaymen and warlords, and international observers ... cannot cover more than one tenth of the (electoral) districts," al-Zawahiri said.

He added that "the international mercenaries (UN observers) had seen only staged polls in some cities".

The al-Qaida No 2 said the group carried out the London bombings

http://www.lauramansfield.com

Dressed in a black turban once again, but this time in front of a white backdrop, Al Qaeda second in command Dr. Ayman Zawahiri bragged to the world that "The London attack is one of the many such attacks that al Qaeda has the honor of carrying out against the British arrogance, the aggression of the crusader British against the Muslim nation for over a hundred years".

The statement, aired on Al Jazeera this afternoon, was the second such tape from Zawahiri in less than a month.

Al Jazeera claimed that the tape was produced by Sahab Enterprises, the media production arm of Al Qaeda, which has produced many other videos in recent years.

The video included subtitles in English. Al Jazeera claims that they were informed the tape was made to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

Mighty tall words for a feller who strains soup through his beard and a bunch of guys who saute grubs in caves. Yep, they rule the country all right. Square meters of it.

Out of 6,270 voting booths in Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al Qaeda, combined, were only able to shut down 12 this week.

Yet they can make a video claiming that they are the ones in power.

Uh, huh...
