LOS ANGELES - A 74-year-old survivor of Hurricane Katrina who was trapped in a New Orleans home for nearly two weeks has died of complications related to dehydration and malnutrition, the California National Guard reported Monday.

Edgar Hollingsworth, an Army veteran of the Korean War, died Saturday at a New Orleans area hospital, Air Force Capt. Brenda Hendrickson of the California National Guard told The Associated Press by phone from Louisiana. He had been found four days earlier buried under a pile of rubble.

Hollingsworth is scheduled to be buried at 2 p.m. Tuesday with military honors at the Port Hudson National Cemetery, 10 miles north of Baton Rouge.

At the request of his wife, Lillian, military personnel and other authorities who helped rescue him will serve as pallbearers, along with his son, Wesley, the California National Guard said in a statement.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency had issued orders to rescue workers not to enter Katrina-ravaged homes unless they heard the cries of survivors. However, a National Guard team disobeyed orders after seeing Hollingsworth's foot protruding from the rubble of a home.

The guard team bashed open the door and found Hollingsworth unconscious and emaciated. Rescue workers immediately gave him saline solution through an IV and rushed him to a local hospital.

He died with his wife and daughter at his side, said Tracy Sayge, a spokesman for the California National Guard.

However, a National Guard team disobeyed orders after seeing Hollingsworth's foot protruding from the rubble of a home.

Prayers to the family.

How can you disobey an order to enter a house when there is no house left, only 'rubble?'

The media is in a word, sick.

If I may add my prayers to yours that "God rest his soul".

And God Bless the National Guard team who rescued him from beneath the rubble so that this heart-strong veteran was able to be with his wife and daughter one last time before he went home to God.

The graphic, once hopeful, now tragic picture of his rescue has become a symbol of New Orleans.

Thank You. I've been try to decide to post the pic or not, and exactly what to say along with it. You handled it perfectly and expressed my thoughts as well.

Rest in peace Mr. Hollingsworth.

"The media is in a word, sick."

Yes they are. They couldn't just leave the story as a tale of human tragedy as a result of Katrina; they had to take their jab at FEMA, and essentially, make them the responsible party. What's more outrageous is that FEMA doesn't even have the authority this reporter has given them. From their own website, FEMA doesn't "Take "charge" of recovery efforts."

This fallacy is even evident in Mayor Nagin's call to repopulate the city. While FEMA may have suggested it was an unwise move, it was still the mayor who would make the final call. While FEMA may have suggested it was unwise to search through debris, the national guard still operates under the orders of the state. I'm sick of these lies and innuendo.

Mayor Nagin's

You meant to say 'Mayor Schoolbus Nagin' as he has been coined by Rush and will live in infamy.  Sadly, rather than being recalled I have the feeling Nagin is going to take over the DNC as soon as Dean is pushed out.  The dems seem to worship poverty makers.
