A fellow American in Massachusetts knows you'd do the same for us. We're Americans after all, it's our responsibility.

Many of my friends in the Army were flown in to help in the relief.
Thomas Sowell's latest book, Black Rednecks and White Liberals, points out that although the southern slaveowners who oppressed blacks in the south were white Christians, and although Christianity from its inception recognized slavery as a legitimate institution (see Paul's letter to Philemon), Christianity in general and English-speaking Christians in particular turned away from that acceptance beginning around the time of the American Revolution. The British maintained a squadron of warships off the coast of Africa to interdict the slave trade, and exerted influence worldwide to suppress slavery - for no other reason than British revulsion at the practice.

And Sowell points out that the unpleasantness of the 1860s was over secession, but secession was over slavery.

So in any event slavery as an institution was not ended by all Christians, but - worldwide - it was ended by white Christians with rifles, and by no one else. And the same sort of folks are providing security and supplies and helfp for you all now. Which I'm sure they all, of whatever color or of whatever region of America, are proud to do.

I just hope that Mr. Bush will be able to organize the long-term federal response to this mess well. Tremendous temptation will try to make the effort degenerate into a massive boondoggle.
