Some illegal immigrants were told they could seek aid without fear. They are told to appear.
WASHINGTON -- After heeding the Bush administration's call to seek help regardless of status, a handful of illegal immigrants who fled Hurricane Katrina have been ordered to appear for deportation hearings.
Three undocumented immigrants were met by immigration agents at the El Paso, Texas, airport when they were flown in from the Gulf Coast along with other evacuees, said Leticia Zamarripa, Immigration and Custom Enforcement spokeswoman in El Paso. A fourth person, a permanent legal resident, was questioned and released, she said.
The immigrants went through background checks and fingerprinting and were released with orders to appear for deportation hearings, Zamarripa said. They were allowed to go to other shelters in Texas, said Ouisa Davis, an attorney for one of the immigrants. She did not have details, including the date of the initial questioning.
The accused passenger and a companion, both from Central America, were taken into custody, Boyd said. When ICE officials interviewed the woman, she refused to press charges or testify. The accused immigrant denied her allegations. He and his companion remained in custody.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Homeland Security Department encouraged all storm victims, including illegal immigrants, to seek help. The appeal was made in English and Spanish.
The agency stopped short of assuring that information about immigration status would not be shared with law enforcement agencies -- a protection that was extended after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
The law enforcement actions have left at least one group concerned about lending its influence to the federal government's efforts to reach immigrants affected by the storm.
The White House was "actively communicating to us and the Spanish-language press that everyone could come forward," said Cecilia Munoz, vice president of policy for the National Council of La Raza, the largest U.S.-based Hispanic advocacy group.
"If federal authorities are using this as an enforcement opportunity, it creates a moral dilemma for us in how do we advise our constituents," Munoz said. "We are getting mixed signals."
There is no dilema. Just deport them. Via the helicopter drop. No more excuses.

I know the president asked people to seek out the authorities for help, but did he and/or the administration promise not to inquire into status? If so, I don't remember that, though I did miss part of his speech.
The fourth ppg sticks out from the rest of the article and makes me think that there is more to the story.
1. Illegals are.....illegal.
2. Morals? They're already breaking the law by being illegal.
3. Munoz refers to them as "constituents"????

I don't normally post to these threads, but I do read them when I have a chance.
I want to thank all of you that try to keep us informed on what is happening on the borders in this country.
For doing this, a few of you have been raked over the coals and called probably every name in the book.
I would like to add that wanting to stop illegal immigration into this country does not make a person racist or hateful.
Wanting to see justice brought against people who knowingly come into this country and break our laws isn't racist.
Illegal immigrants are trampling on our sovereignty. If some are coming to improve their lives, there are still others that are coming to do worse things. How many terrorists have already come through? We'll never know, will we?
Loving this country and wanting to see a better future for our own children isn't racist, but necessary to ensure there is an America for them.
Thank you to all of you.

It's called a "sting operation", Cecilia!
Oh big deal at best it will be a tag and release program.
"The immigrants went through background checks and fingerprinting and were released with orders to appear for deportation hearings"..............enforcement???????
Aren't you glad we're doing such a good job securing the borders? < /sarcasm>
La Raza Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
It's outrageous that those here illegally are being encouraged to sign up for citizen-funded freebies. It's just wrong.
They assumed that "help" after the emergency meant "amnesty" and/or "free citizenship" or something along those lines, and not food, shelter and emergency medical care as/if needed.
Illegal status doesn't mean you're going to be suddenly not responsible for your illegal behaviors at times of need, it just means you'll get a warm meal, clean clothes, a shower and perhaps a bed at taxpayer expense.
I think the "shock and awe" comments by illegals at being fingerprinted and reprimanded for their illegal behavior is disgusting. I don't see any thankyews in there anywhere for the all the helps.
no no no nononono....WORLD'S LARGEST CATAPULT.
It should be illegal! If the government stopped supporting 10 million + illegals in this country they could pay the entire Katrina bill.
Thats a pay per view winner my friend... Your idea.
Three?! In El Paso?!?! Just Three??!!
I say give em a broom and see how much they clean up over the span of a week!
Then give em a green card or citizenship. Too many real citizens that are sitting around still looking for a bus that could be sent to a different country. Then we'll see who complains!
Hey W, DEPORT 'EM ALL!
Ike did it, so can you!
