Why no router? That's the key to security with an always-on connection. They're cheap and effective.

"Why no router? That's the key to security with an always-on connection.

Originally, because I was too cavalier, I went until 2001 without even using AV. I went shopping for one yesterday and everything seemed way under-priced or way over priced. I don't want a wireless network, but I would like to be able to connect another box with a cat-5, the sales(kid) was entirely useless, I searched around and asked another "Computer Expert who knew even less than the first kid. So I decided to come home and read up. I want to control in/out I want to be able to add one PC, I suppose I would like to stay on the low end of the price scale, but that's not a priority. I have a very fast 5+mbps adsl connection.running XP -any suggestions? Thanks!

I've had good luck with Netgear routers. I have an MR814, which is an 802.11b wireless router. They seem to be available very inexpensively right now -- cheaper than the non-wireless routers.

It has web browser-based configuration. i.e. type the router's address into your web browser, log in and configure the router. You can turn off the wireless access point with a single click. With wireless turned off, it is a four port 10/100mbps wired router.
