Fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother taken to hospital

Reports: Frederiksen apparently cut wrists

Published: 09/22/2005 12:33 PM

CHARLES CITY, IA - The fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother was taken to a hospital after he apparently cut his wrists, the Charles City Press reported Thursday.

Casey Frederiksen, lying on his stomach and with his bandaged wrists restrained behind his back, was carried from his back yard on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the newspaper said.

Five-year-old Evelyn Miller disappeared July 1 from the apartment in Floyd where she lived with her mother, Noel Miller, Frederiksen and two young brothers.

Her body was found six days later in the Cedar River, about two miles from her home. Her death has been ruled a homicide, but details about how and when she was killed have not been released. No arrests have been made.

Miller and Frederiksen moved to a house in Charles City after Evelyn's funeral.

Charles City Police Chief Mike Wendell declined Thursday to name the injured person, to describe the nature of the ambulance call, or whether it was a suicide attempt. He cited several reasons for not commenting, including federal privacy laws.

"The other is it appears to be the same people involved in a major investigation," Wendell said.

He did confirm the address as a rental home Frederiksen shares with Noel Miller.

According to the newspaper, neighbors reported hearing yelling and screaming coming from the house just before police and paramedics arrived.

A woman visiting neighbors at the time of Wednesday's incident said Frederiksen ran out the back door about 10 minutes after police entered, the newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, several neighbors also reported seeing a bloody knife thrown from the front door onto the lawn after police entered the house.

Miller left a short time after the ambulance left with Frederiksen, witnesses said.

Frederiksen was transported in a squad car from Floyd County Memorial Hospital later in the evening by two Floyd County sheriff's deputies, the newspaper said.

Wendell, the police chief, said he did not have any details on where the individual was taken.

The Floyd County attorney's office said County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer was out of the office Thursday and no one else in the office was available to answer questions.

Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch also was also out of the office, the sheriff's office said.

Last week, Miller and Frederiksen told KCRG-TV they feel they've been unfairly targeted by investigators and judged by the community. The day before, investigators searched the couple's former apartment complex in Floyd.

Evelyn's father, Andy Christie, of Waterloo, told KCRG-TV Wednesday night that he hasn't spoken with Noel Miller since his daughter's memorial service.

Christie and his wife, Lindsey, said they contacted the Iowa Department of Human Services after Evelyn said some unusual things but "DHS never believed anything we said."

Recent news reports have said he and the child's mother have been subjected to commentary similar in nature to what I've seen expressed in this forum about them...

Too bad people can't wait for a trial before convicting someone...

I do not know if he did it. I was saying he could have been extremely distraught over her death, OR guilty about causing it.

No one has convicted him. We're just saying that he is "looking guilty." That doesn't mean he's guilty.

The most dangerous place for children is with their mother and her live-in.

I have connections in the area. Their rumor is that it is the mother that is the primary suspect, not necessarily the live-in.

Ambulance, police called for Evelyn's stepfather

By Jennifer Meyer, Staff writer
Charles City Press

The man engaged to the mother of slain 5-year-old Evelyn Miller was taken to the hospital Wednesday night following an apparent suicide attempt.

Lying on his stomach and with his bandaged wrists restrained behind his back, Casey Frederiksen was carried from his back yard on a stretcher and placed into an ambulance at about 7:15 p.m.

Charles City police were dispatched to a report that a male had cut his wrists shortly before 7 p.m. at the 902B E St. rental house Frederiksen shares with Evelyn's mother, Noel Miller.

Evelyn was reported missing early on July 1 from the 1781 Quarry Road apartment Frederiksen shared with Evelyn's mother, Noel Miller, and the couple's two sons.

Five days later, the young girl's body was recovered from the Cedar River two miles north of Charles City.

Authorities say Evelyn was murdered, but have not released how or when. No arrests have been made.

Miller and Frederiksen relocated from the Floyd area to Charles City in August.

A woman visiting neighbors at the time of Wednesday's incident said Frederiksen exited through the back door of the house about 10 minutes after police entered.

"Casey came running out. I guess he was refusing to go and they tackled him," the woman said.

Neighbors reported hearing yelling and screaming coming from the house just before police and paramedics arrived.

"There was an argument going on and it was mostly her yelling," the woman said.

Several neighbors also reported seeing a bloody knife thrown from the front door onto the lawn after police entered the house.

Miller left a short time after the ambulance departed with Frederiksen with a woman who, neighbors say, works with the Department of Human Services.

Frederiksen was transported in a squad car from Floyd County Memorial Hospital later in the evening by two Floyd County deputy sheriffs.

Police had filed no charges against Frederiksen as of Wednesday night.

Last Thursday, Miller and Frederiksen told KCRG-TV they feel they've been unfairly targeted by investigators and judged by the community.

The day before, investigators searched the couple's former apartment complex.

Agents from the Division of Criminal Investigation and Floyd County Sheriff's Office examined clothing, blankets and a tent in a garage south of the complex. Swabs were taken from an area carpet. Investigators also photographed a vehicle in a second garage, as well as searched another vehicle beside it.

Earlier this month, Evelyn's uncle said, a federal grand jury heard testimony about a computer owned by Miller and Frederiksen.

Jeremiah Christie -- whose brother, Andy, is Evelyn's father -- said he testified about the computer's hard drive and software.

He said police took the computer apart as they searched the apartment after the girl disappeared. The hard drive of the computer was not in the computer, however.

A neighbor at the complex has said she was asked to keep the hard drive by Evelyn's mother after the girl disappeared. The neighbor, Tanya Martinez, told sheriff's deputies that Miller "freaked out" when she learned the hard drive had been turned over to authorities in August, a police report says.

Christie said he testified to the grand jury that Frederiksen seemed nervous after investigators searched the apartment in the days after Evelyn's disappearance. Frederiksen was apparently concerned about some files on the computer hard drive.

On Sept. 2, a computer was among at least 15 evidence bags taken by investigators upon searching the couple's Charles City home.

Frederiksen said the computer contains memories and pictures of his and Miller's children.

Noel Miller said she found her daughter missing after returning from working overnight at the Nora Springs Care Center at about 6:20 a.m. Frederiksen and the couple's sons were asleep inside the apartment.

Two acquaintances of the couple -- Randy Patrie and Dan Slick -- are believed to be the last people to have seen Evelyn between 2-2:30 a.m. They have repeatedly said they left the young girl unharmed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Any statistics to back that up or are we working anecdotally?

I only ask because for a few months before we married, I was the live in with my now wife of 16 years, whose children were 6 and 3 at the time.

Yes, the statistics support the fact that, having survived birth, a child is most likely to be abused or killed by the live-in boyfried of the single mother. The stats have been up on FR; you might try searching on "crime statistics" or something like that. I think there was something on Townhall.com as well; don't know if that site has a subject search function.

Of course that doesn't mean that every man living with a woman to whom he's not married hurts her children! The majority do not.

Yeah. A few years ago, there was a huge analysis of reports of crime against children. This was in a jurisdiction where they kept records of the living arrangements of the victims, which doesn't usually happen.

The safest place for children was with their biological mother and father, who were married to each other. The most dangerous place was with the mother and the live-in. Children were 33 times more likely to be victimized in that situation than those living with their married parents.

I took it to be similar to those 'statistics' which say having a gun in the house means it's more likely someone in the house will be killed by a gun. Or, something to that effect.

At any rate, I wouldn't take it personally.

Oh, and this isn't the first time said danger has been discussed today. In the earlier thread, it was given a catchy name ("Tomcat Syndrome").
