Breaking New on CNN a few minutes ago. A reporter said Sonny Perdue is going to close Georgia's Public Schools Monday and Tuesday of next week to conserve fuel and energy.

Sounds a little like a panicky overreaction to me, unless Perdue has some kind of information that hasn't hit the wires yet.
Is this for real?
Why does the GA governor feel this need? I don't understand.
Seeing how GA is not in the projected path of Rita I would think they are over reacting just a tad
Agreed. Is this supposedly due to Rita?
What did they do back in the old days before air conditioning? Or did school not come about until the invention of the air conditioner?
By the way, naming your kid "Wolf" is also a very disturbing development.
I really heard it on CNN -- haven't talked to Sonny yet :-}
I think it is more just to save energy - maybe there is more to it than that.
Note to self: Fill tank on the way home tonight.
Schools used to close with some predictability when I was growing up in NYC. The school closings tapered off during my hih school years and I don't think nyc shuts its schools often at all on account of snow.
They gave a huge figure in gallons of gas the State could save by not using the buses. Sounds like a conservation effort in case the refineries go down.

I think Sonny just wants to ensure a victory in the next "Kid's Vote!" election campaign. Ah, to be a student in Georgia...
It's been confirmed by a local news person with the governor's office. Press conference soon.
Some schools are not designed to breathe anymore. The old schools were designed for air to move through them. Now they build them with air conditioning in mind. You must have air conditioning, or the buildings become ovens.
Maybe they don't have enough fuel to run the school buses.
Not a bad idea, Rita is already causing prices to go up. Even if the damage isn't that bad, closing the platforms and refineries will cause price to spike again in the short term. After katrina, remember Atlanta saw $5 and above gas. So closing school for a few days will save school systems a lot of money.
Conserve Gas used in thousands of Georgia School buses in case there is a shortage while refineries are down.
